Don C. McCain died on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Yuma Regional Medical Center at the age of 91. He was born on the Bonson Ranch in the Yuma Valley on December 24, 1922. His parents were Murl M. McCain Sr. and Lille J Pool McCain Smith. Don attended Shadyside School, Rood School and Yuma Union High School. Upon graduation from High School, he enrolled at the University of Arizona, where in 1943 as a Lt. in the ROTC Cavalry Unit at the University, he was called into service during
WWII. The Cavalry was disbanded and Don became a Navigator with the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was in the Ferry Command delivering planes all over the world and in the China Burma India Theater flying over the "hump". Don was discharged in 1946 and returned to the University where he graduated in 1947. At the University, he was included in Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities. Was named to Alpha Zeta, the Agricultural Honorary and he received the honor of being named the outstanding graduate of the College of Agriculture and he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. For the next forty years, Don was employed by Arizona Agrochemical Company as a Pest Control Advisor in Yuma, Somerton, Bard and Mohawk areas, and he was a farmer, growing citrus, cotton, wheat and alfalfa on the Yuma Mesa and in the Yuma Valley. Don served on many committees benefitting the Agricultural community, including the Yuma County Fair Board, Ag Committee for the Chamber of Commerce, Yuma Citrus Club and the Yuma County Farm Bureau. Don served for many years on the Yuma County Pest Abatement District and Yuma County Citrus Pest Control Board. Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Verda; sons, Lee McCain (Eline) of Yuma and Deryl McCain of Wyoming; grandaughter, Amy Karvoski (Chris) of Yuma; grandson, Don Austin McCain (Amanda) of Florida; great granddaughters, Dru Marie Karvoski and Mina Rae McCain; great grandson, Trent Karvoski; sister, Maxine McCain Dick of Yuma. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Dru Ann McCain; brothers, Murl M Jr. and Robert; his sisters, Lillian Hart and Bobbie Ruth Johnson; and step-father, Denny Smith. A Viewing will be held on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. followed by the memorial service at 10:00 a.m. with Phil Clark officiating at Johnson Mortuary, 1415 S 1st Avenue, Yuma. Burial will follow at Desert Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers: Don Austin McCain, Chris Karvoski, Doug Henry, Jesus Ontiveros Sr., Taylor McCain and Steven Dick. Honorary Pallbearers: Harry "Bill" Weeks and William J."Billy" Scott Sr. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to an Agricultural Scholarship to the University of Arizona in Don's memory.
