Dolores Devota Sabala1919 ~ 2016Dolores Sabala, 96, of Boise, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9, 2016. Dolores (Dee) was born on December 13, 1919 in Clearbrook, Minnesota to parents Carl Milton Bjorkquist and Agnes Anna Wiench. The family moved around quite a bit in Dee's younger years, living in Gonvick, Minnesota, where her sister, Frances, was born, and later moving to Bismarck, North Dakota. When Dee was in 1st grade, they moved to Eugene, Oregon before relocating to The Dalles, Oregon for a few more years. Dee's family eventually settled in Boise, Idaho so her father could start a Food Brokerage Company. Dee attended Lowell Elementary School from 4th through 8th grade and graduated from Boise High School in 1937, with a 4.0 GPA. She received a scholarship to Boise Junior College and graduated 2 years later. After learning shorthand at Boise Business School, Dee began working as a Secretary for Elks Rehabilitation Hospital.Having met the love of her life, Fermin Juan Sabala, back in high school, the two were married on June 7, 1941. Dee and Fermin purchased a home and began their life together, which included having three children: Devota (Dede), Denise, and Doug. Many summer vacations were spent in McCall, Idaho, in a small cabin by the lake.In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Dee was a thoughtful and kind friend to many in the community and St. Mary's Parrish. She sent a card for every birthday, anniversary, and special occasion for friends and family – always on time, usually a few days early. She also had monthly birthday celebrations with friends, rotating hosting potlucks at her home. Dee was the type of person who always put others' needs before her own and she did so with a smile. For 14 years, Dee worked at Selective Service System until it became an all volunteer force. She closed the office with General George Bennett. Dee then worked for the Department of Justice, as a Secretary for all civil cases for the State of Idaho, until her retirement in 1982. Dee was an avid sports fan. Whether it was football, basketball, tennis or golf, she knew the names of athletes and followed their careers. During her retirement, she continued to enjoy summer vacations to the lake in McCall with her children and grandchildren. She was always up for playing card games, and even an occasional game of charades. Dee's playful heart shined through her very poised presence. Dee was a strong woman. After the passing of Fermin, her independence enabled her to remain in her home until the age of 93, when she moved into a care facility. The family would like to express appreciation to Bright Star, Ivy Place, and Jullion House for their dedication, love and care for Dee in her final years. Dee is survived by her children: Dede Sasser of Rancho Mirage, CA, Doug Sabala of Boise, and Denise Dunne of Boise; grandchildren: Lisa Mitchell of Boise, Melinda Sasser-Mielkus of Valencia, CA, Dominica Mathiason of Boise, and Angelina Briggs of Boise; niece Ann Pedicord of Berlin, Germany; nephews Ron Sabala of Boise, and John Anchustegui of Boise; and five great-grandchildren.A Rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Summers Funeral Homes, 1205 W.
