Dexter E. Phibbs, IICarrollton, VA - Dexter Elwin (Sonny) Phibbs died October 27, 2016 at his home in Carrollton, VA. His final days were spent in the loving company of his family and friends.Dexter was born on April 10, 1942 in Wytheville, VA to Dexter Elwin Phibbs, Sr. of Hillsville, VA and Elizabeth Gobroski Phibbs of Charleston, WV. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister Elizabeth Anne Phibbs. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Martha Young Phibbs, his daughter, Carrie Anne Phibbs Crisman, his son Brian McCoy Phibbs, his son in law Jordan L. Crisman, his grandchildren Charles Joseph and Julia Jane Crisman, his brother Joe Cyrus Phibbs, his brother in law Richard McCoy Young, sisters in law Ronnie Young and Gerrie Phibbs, nephew Richard McCoy Young, Jr., nieces Kristen Young Ricks, Llewellyn Phibbs Ramsey and Melissa Phibbs O'Hara, his godsons Christopher Roland Andrews and Morgan Fletcher Drum as well as numerous cousins and extended family members. Dexter grew up in the Indian River area of Norfolk County and graduated from Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, VA in 1960. He attended both Concord College in Athens, WV and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA between 1960 and 1965. His early career was spent as a station engineer at various local radio and television stations including WFOG, WVAB, WOWI and WHRO-TV. Ever the technical wizard, in 1973 he joined Teledyne Hastings Raydist in Hampton, VA as an engineer specializing in radio frequency communications systems, electronic and mechanical manufacturing and navigation systems development. In 1990 he joined Anteon Corporation (formerly Analysis & Technology) as a Corporate Program Manager based on his experience in Sonar Systems and Surface Ship Torpedo Defense systems. From there he worked for SensyTech/Argon ST, General Dynamics and ultimately retired from LPI Technical Services in Chesapeake, VA. Dexter's career made him a world traveler, and be it the Middle East or Far East, from the North Pole to Australia, his charismatic way created long-lasting friendships wherever he landed. He was a true individual, a man of deep conviction and courage who loved his family, friends, God and country. He had a natural kindness towards anyone he met. He was most at home on the open waters of coastal Virginia with a fishing rod in one hand and cold beer in the other or tinkering with an engine in the solace of his workshop while the dulcet tones of Don Shirley, Ahmad Jamal or Dave Brubeck echoed in the background. He had an irreverent sense of humor and an infectious laugh. For most of his life he had never been a joiner of clubs until he became a member of Corinthian Masonic Lodge #206, AF and AM, and a proud member of the Tidewater Boat Club in Norfolk, VA. His bonds of brotherhood and friendship sustained him through the hardship of a long and difficult illness. The love and support of his friends will never be forgotten by his family. Martha, Carrie and Brian would especially like to thank Dr. Michael Eggert and Robyn Kunkel, P.A. for their expertise, excellent care and support.A memorial service will be held Friday November 4, 2016 at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Norfolk Chapel, 1501 Colonial Avenue Norfolk, VA at 4pm with a celebration of his life to follow at the Tidewater Boat Club.
