Dena C. Cukr of National City, passed away peacefully at her home under the loving care of her family and hospice on Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, age 75 years. Dena was born on Nov. 25, 1940 in Detroit to Clifton and Dorothy (Siersma) Church. She graduated from Allen Park High School in the Class of 1959 and attended nursing school at Deaconess College. Dena was employed as an office manager for the Lutheran Social Services at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Detroit for many years and later worked at W.O.W. Electronics in Detroit. In 2006 she decided to step away from the work force and enjoy her retirement years. She is well remembered for her interest in rare finds, antiques and collectibles. Dena was involved for quite a few years in an Upper Peninsula bicycle excursion with a group known as the MUP's. She enjoyed bicycling as well, however, she was able to participate in the setting up, coordination, and planning of this annual trip that hundreds of bicyclists participate in. Dena was an active member in her community of Grant Township and she spent many hours assisting in the Women's Auxiliary. She will also be remembered for her warm heart for animals, and her joy of getting together with friends to play cards and Bingo. Dena will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her two children, David (Susan) Smith of Chesterfield and Leslie (Dennis) Fukushima of Pahoa, Hawaii; eight grandchildren, Michael, Rebecca, Emily, Dorothy, DenaRose, Dennis Jr., Edward and Carolyn; one great granddaughter, Autumn; her sister, Janice (Robert) Hood of Clinton Township; her niece, Allyson; and her nephew, Kevin. Dena was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Edward Smith and Glenn Cukr; and her mother-in-law, Carmen King. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place.
