David Lewis MosesOak Ridge, TNDr. David Lewis Moses passed away at his home in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on October 21, 2017. He was 70-years-old. Dr. Moses was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Jo Moses, his father Willard Artemis Moses and mother Anna Lee Moses. He is survived, by his two children, Rachel Michelle Moses, a legal aid attorney in Cookeville, Tennessee, and his son, Adam Wesley Moses, an immigration attorney in Brooklyn, New York. He is survived also by his brothers, Steven Lee Moses (Dee), of Durham, North Carolina, Willard Alvin Moses (Teresa) of Hixson, Tennessee, as well as his lady-friend, Georgia Brownfield, of Oak Ridge. David was born on August 4, 1947, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and raised in the nearby Falling Water community. Dr. Moses earned his bachelor's degrees in Physics and Mathematics in 1969 from the University of Chattanooga. While in college, Dr. Moses participated in the ROTC program and was awarded the Hughes Trophy for earning the highest grade point average of all candidates nationwide. From 1969 to 1973, he served as a Field Artillery Captain in the U.S. Army, with his service including a tour in Vietnam from August 1971 to May 1972. David was a passionate nuclear engineer whose later career was spent in the pursuit of knowledge. Following his military service, Dr. Moses studied Nuclear Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, earning a Master's degree and PhD in 1980. During his studies, Dr. Moses also served as a Senior Scientist with the Westinghouse Electric Company's Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory where he studied submarine reactor physics and thermal-hydraulics performance analysis. In 1981, Dr. Moses commenced his 26-year career at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, ultimately serving as a Senior Program Manager. During this time, he oversaw research in high-temperature materials, ceramic reactor fuels, reactor physics, plutonium and actinide disposition in Russia. Among the projects he oversaw, Dr. Moses served as the principal investigator on National Regulatory Commission licensing work on the Modular High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor and the Fort St. Vrain HTGR. After retiring in 2007, he continued to provide consultant services to Harbach Engineering and Solutions and XCEL Engineering. Dr. Moses was an active promoter and volunteer for numerous charitable organizations. He was an active member of the American Nuclear Society and previously served as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Girls Incorporated of Oak Ridge. Dr. Moses was also an ardent animal lover, leaving behind his two black cats, Zoe and Hermione, as well as his grandsquirrel, The Squirrel. A visitation and viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A receiving of friends will be held at the Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel in Hixson on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Ashes will be interred at a late date.
