David GrovesSeptember 13, 1950 - November 21, 2016San Jose, CA - David Wilson Groves died on November 21, 2016. A memorial service will be held on July 8th at 2:30 PM at Stayton United Methodist Church, Stayton, OR. Family and friends are welcome to attend a reception lunch before the service at 1:00 PM at that church. He is survived by siblings Meredith J. Groves, Linda (Groves) Crenshaw, and Alan Groves, four nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Meredith R. Groves in 2015, and his mother, Dorothy Wilson Groves in 2016.He was born on September 13, 1950 in Dallas, TX. Just after his first birthday, his family moved to Boise, ID. An excellent student, he was active in Boy Scouts, church youth group and choirs. After high school, he attended Columbia University on a National Merit Scholarship. He then moved to Los Angeles, San Francisco and finally Berkeley, CA. During this time, he held several different jobs, and attended the Cordon Bleu cooking school.He attended UC Berkeley, graduated in 1982 with a B.A. in computer science, and was hired by IBM, moving to San Jose in 1989. While at IBM, he earned a master's in computer science from Stanford University. He was an avid coin and antique collector, and enjoyed cooking and travel. Over 30 years, he rescued many dearly-loved stray cats.Near the end of his life he renewed his Christian faith, and again incorporated scripture, personal prayer, and trust in Christ in his life. He will be remembered for his great intelligence, his compassion for the downtrodden, his inquisitiveness, and his dry wit.
