CLARK, Daryl Edward It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Daryl Clark on June 17, 2017 surrounded by his cherished family and friends in his home overlooking the ocean. Daryl is survived by his wife Joanna, and children Patrick (Laura), Stephanie (DJ) and Hilary (George), his mother Evelyn, his sister Sharon and niece Kimberly.Daryl was born on November 8, 1957. Son to Dr. Edward Clark (deceased 2012) and Evelyn Clark. Daryl grew up in North Vancouver, attended Canyon Heights Elementary and Handsworth Secondary. He excelled on the sports field, first in the Forest Hills Little League, MacSween Soccer, and ultimately Senior Boys basketball and football as a Handsworth Royal during the heady days of the mid 1970's.Daryl attended the University of British Columbia. While there he was an accomplished athlete and a proud member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. At UBC, Daryl discovered a passion for history, learning, thinking and writing and with that, a desire to study the law. Daryl graduated from UBC Law School in 1984.Given Daryl's natural curiosity, it's not surprising he interrupted his legal career to pursue the path of an entrepreneur. He boldly started an import export business in Russia following the collapse of the iron curtain. In the mid 1990's he returned to the practice of law ultimately becoming an expert in domestic and cross border transactions and a highly-respected partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. Daryl's practice focused on corporate and finance law supporting international clients doing business in Canada. He often remarked that his entrepreneurial years, combined with his passion for American history and politics, greatly enhanced his ability to apply the law to commercial business and gave a deeper meaning to the law he so loved and practiced. Significantly, Daryl combined his penchant for thinking and writing, by articulating his thoughts on global affairs, particularly those involving the United States, in a series of political essays he called "Six Packs". Through these essays he shared his thoughtful analysis with his friends and his community. Each successive Six Pack reached a larger and wider audience.Daryl's greatest joy was his family. He and Joanna raised their children on the North Shore and over the years Daryl was happiest when coaching his children's sports teams and attending all their games. Daryl was immensely proud of his children and their many accomplishments. Spending time with his kids, watching sports and golfing with Patrick, hiking with Stephanie and Hilary and being there to cheer them on was his purpose in life.He was a lifetime member of Hollyburn County Club, where he served as President for two years. Daryl was an avid golfer, and an active member at Capilano Golf Club, a course he loved, for its quality of play, natural setting, and the many friends he had there. In recent years Daryl, Joanna and the kids found sanctuary at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona where they would breathe the fresh air, hike among the Saguaro cacti, share good meals, play golf, and most importantly laugh. He adored his many close and loyal friends and his large and extended family. But it was Joanna that was the love and centre of his life, his closest companion for 35 years, his foundation, his support and in the last few years she never left his side. They took on his illness and stood shoulder to shoulder through very difficult times and never lost sight of the deep love they felt for one another.Daryl's fight with cancer was remarkable and inspirational to all that had the privilege to witness it. He took on one obstacle after another with a thoughtful but steely determination to win. In the three and half years Daryl battled prostate cancer he worked tirelessly for the cause and succeeded in motivating many people to join the effort.The family wishes to thank to the doctors and staff at the VGH Prostate Centre and the B.C. Cancer Agency, who never wavered in their efforts on Daryl's behalf. A special thanks to Dr. Martin Gleave, Dr. Kim Chi and Nikita Ivanov.The disease did not define Daryl Clark, but it exemplified the greatness of his character, the strength, the purpose and the purity of his convictions. Daryl will be remembered most by all those who knew him as a loving and devoted husband; an engaged and adored father; and a loyal and trusted friend and brother. He will be profoundly missed.A memorial service will be held at West Vancouver United Church on Tuesday, June 27 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at Capilano Golf and Country Club.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Daryl's team, Daryl's Heidelberg Hope, in the upcoming 2017 Ride to Conquer Cancer, at the following link:www.conquercancer.ca
