Our Heavenly Father called our Rock, Mrs. Dora S. Goodwyn of Church Road, Va., entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 26, 2016. Dora was born on March 3, 1931, in Baltimore, Md., to the late James Roosevelt Shelton and Pearl Thompson Shelton. She was married at a young age to the late Willie (Boojack) James Henry Sr., whom she became a widow of in 1976.She was preceded in death by her son, Garry Keith Goodwyn; and sisters, Nannie MacKenzie, Grace Johnson and Carol Drake.Dora was a retired teacher from the Dinwiddie County School System with thirty-five years. Dora was the Valedictorian at Russell Grove High School, Class of 1948. She was a graduate of Virginia State College (University). She was a faithful member of a few different organizations around the surrounding counties including but not limited to: the Dinwiddie Alumni Chapter VSU, National Educational Association, Virginia Educational Association, Amelia Retirees Association, DCMS Mentor and the Jolly Sunshine Group. She also was the Treasurer of over twenty-five years for the Union Baptist Church where she has been a life-time and very faithful member.Dora was one of the most selfless, kind-hearted, loving individuals around, she loved to help her community, family and friends with driving them to doctor appointments, hospital visits or just around town. Dora enjoyed traveling all over the United States and especially her monthly casino trips to Charlestown, WV. She also should have had stock in the Virginia State Lottery. The lottery will miss her daily contributions. Dora loved taking pictures of all the places she visited and events attended. Dora was a woman of knowledge and wisdom who always saw the good in anyone or any situation, never complaining or looking for a reward for all the good work she had done.Dora Goodwyn leaves with fond memories to cherish, her devoted and loving children, Jacquelyn (Jackie) Carey of Lanham, Md., Dorian McCray of Henrico, Va. and Robbin (Frog) Alston of Upper Marlboro, Md., and one very devoted and loving son, Willie (Spanky) Goodwyn, Jr.; devoted daughter-in-law, Thelma Goodwyn of Church Road, Va.; son-in-law, James Alston; adopted son-in-law, William (Jessie) Johnson of Lanham, Md.; two devoted and loving granddaughters, Jamika McCray of Henrico, Va., and Nichelle Finney of Richmond, Va., and three upstanding grandsons, Maurice Carey of Washington, DC, Eric McCray of Norfolk, Va., and D'Mon Goodwyn of Church Road, Va.; three loving great-granddaughters, Kyhia and Torrie McCray of Henrico, Va., and Little Miss D'Vyne Dudley of Hyattville, Md.; one loving sister, Alice Williams of Henrico, Va.; one adopted brother, Charles "Sonny" Thompson (Dawn) of Staunton, Va.; one sister-in-law and very dear friend, Virginia "Sussie" Morgan of Church Road, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Howard Johnson, Sr. of Richmond, Va. and Jessie Perry of Baltimore, Md.; one aunt, Gladys Shelton of Richmond, Va., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, among them, devoted friends, Rachel Hamilton, Queen Anderson, Thomas and Barbara Booker, Rena Brown and many, many more too numerous to name.Services for Mrs. Dora S. Goodwyn will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Union Baptist Church, 3701 Namozine Road, Church Road, Va., the Rev. Dr. Leroy Rhone, Pastor, eulogist. Interment at the church cemetery.The family will assemble at 1 p.m. the day of the service at 2140 Chesden Lake Road, Church Road, Va.
