Dec 22, 1922 - Jul 29, 2017
This obituary is administered by:
Bowman, Constance Judkins Constance Judkins Bowman died peacefully in her sleep on July 29, 2017, at age 94 in Charlottesville, Virginia, at her home at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge. Mrs. Bowman was born on December 22, 1922, in Merrimac, Massachusetts, the daughter of John B. and Elizabeth W. Judkins. Her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather owned a coach building and automobile design and manufacturing firm in Merrimac where Mrs. Bowman grew up. Her father designed and built classic Lincoln and other automobiles in the 1920s and 1930s. While accomplished and astute, Mrs. Bowman was best known and beloved throughout her life for her generosity of spirit. She never met a stranger and quickly turned any conversation to how the other person was doing. She was preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack) B. Bowman in 1989; her older son, William J. Bowman of Chevy Chase, MD, in 2010; and her brother, John B. Judkins, Jr., of Boulder, CO, in 2015. Mrs. Bowman graduated in 1940 from the Walnut Hill School in Natick, MA, where she was the newspaper editor-in-chief and voted "most curious." She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA, in 1944, where she was active in Barnswallows, the college theater group. She remained an energetic alumna for her class and local Wellesley clubs and treasured gatherings with close college friends throughout her life. From 1945-47, she worked in Columbus, OH, for IBM as a Systems Service engineer for companies that bought IBM products. At IBM, they called the petite Mrs. Bowman "a tiny gift from Wellesley." In April 1947, she married her husband Jack, a 1944 graduate of Harvard College, on his return from military service in Europe. The couple had three children: Elizabeth (Betsy), William (Bill), and Robert (Bob), always known as the "3 B's." During Mr. Bowman's career as a corporate executive, the family relocated to two Chicago suburbs, to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and in 1962, to Elm Grove, WI, a Milwaukee suburb where Mrs. Bowman lived for the next 41 years. The outgoing couple made loyal lifelong friends wherever they went. In Elm Grove particularly, Mrs. Bowman was very involved in her children's activities as they grew up. She cherished her dear friends there and their companionable book club, crafts group, and other social activities. In the greater Milwaukee area, Mrs. Bowman worked as a public relations consultant and participated for 40 years in extensive volunteer and fundraising activities, particularly in the arts. She was an Associate with the Bishea Meili & Associates public relations firm for many years, where she began the Milwaukee Area Media Directory and did client fund-raising. An indefatigable volunteer, Mrs. Bowman gave generously of her energy, superb organizational skills, and warm personal touch. She particularly loved the theater and served as Board member for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater from 1985 to 1998, doing everything from raising money to cooking dinner for the actors. The Rep named her "Volunteer of the Year" in 1998 and one of the theater's rehearsal halls bears her name. One grateful arts board chairman wrote that her "dream board would have 25 clones of Connie Bowman." One of her most exciting projects in her later years involved raising $12.5 million to help preserve "Ten Chimneys," the memorabilia-filled Wisconsin estate of Broadway theater legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine. Mrs. Bowman also was on the Milwaukee Performing Arts Center Board from 1979-88 after years of fund-raising leadership for the United Performing Arts Fund. She served as the Milwaukee United Fund community unit chairman and President of the Milwaukee Wellesley Club, was on the Boards of the Milwaukee Visiting Nurses Association from 1990-1999 and the Women's Club of Wisconsin from 1995-2002. She also was Treasurer of the Friends of the Elm Grove Library, on the Finance Committee of the Elm Grove Community Methodist Church, and volunteered and raised funds for the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Milwaukee PBS station, and the Sunset Playhouse in Elm Grove. She lived her Wellesley College motto: "Non ministrari, sed ministrare" ("Do not be served, but serve"). With her vision failing due to macular degeneration, Mrs. Bowman moved in 2003 to the Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge (WCBR) retirement community in Charlottesville, VA, to be near family. She met her vision loss and other physical challenges with quiet courage and grace. She spent many happy years at WCBR, making a new set of close friends. She enjoyed exploring Virginia and served on the WCBR Finance, Fellowship Foundation, Activities, and Resident Information Center committees, as well as spearheaded a new support group for residents with low vision. The family thanks WCBR, and especially its incredibly devoted Catered Living and Health Care staff, for the loving and supportive care they provided during Mrs. Bowman's final years. To the end, staff member hugs brought a sweet smile to her face. Survivors include her daughter Betsy and son-in-law Randolph T. Pendleton of Charlottesville, VA; her son Bob and daughter-in-law Lisa T. Bowman of Westport, CT; her daughter-in-law Margaret Chou (Bowman) of Chevy Chase, MD; and five grandchildren: Scott J. and Matthew C. Bowman, Laura B. Pendleton, and Emily A. and Jack T. Bowman. Any memorial contributions can be sent to the Fellowship Fund of Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge Foundation, 250 Pantops Mountain Rd., Charlottesville, VA, 22911; the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, 108 E. Wells St., Milwaukee, WI, 53202; or Wellesley College, 106 Central St., Wellesley, MA, 02481. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Charlottesville. Condolences can be sent to the family c/o 1039 Still Meadow Crossing, Charlottesville, VA, 22901.
