Conley VaughnConley Vaughn, 94, of West Lafayette, passed away on January 16, 2017. Our father was born on February 20, 1922 in the small town of Paint Cliff, Kentucky. He was the son of John S. Vaughn and Mary Lee (Lewis) Vaughn. Early in dad's life his family moved from Kentucky to Lafayette. After several moves around the area his family settled in Darlington, Indiana. He graduated from Darlington High School and it was at this time he met our mother, Betty Louise Justice. On December 27, 1947 they eloped to Montgomery County and were married. He was 18, she was 16 and her parents were not at all happy about the marriage and said it would never last. Our mother preceded our father in death on November 13, 2016. If she had lived until December 27 of 2016, they would have been married for 75 years. Our father served in the Army during World War II and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. His theater of service was in China, Burma, and Indian where he was attached to the 38th Chinese Infantry as a radio operator. He received a
Bronze Star for Valor and a Medal of Valor from the Chinese Army. Dad spent most of his working life as a carpenter. He worked for various builders over the years and then in 1970 he went into business for himself until he retired in 1984. He thoroughly enjoyed doing carpenter work, took pride in his work and in providing his customers with a quality product. His favorite hobby was doing lapidary work. He had a rock shop set up in his basement where he would cut and polish rocks, make belt buckles, necklaces, and broaches. He also enjoyed traveling and camping especially with grandkids along. He is survived by three children, Connie Vlahos (husband: Ron), of Luddington, MI, Craig "Randy" Vaughn of Battle Ground, Steven "Carey" Vaughn (wife: Cheri) of Battle Ground; two sisters, Bille Fae Titus (husband: Glen) of Battle Ground, Catherine Noyes of West Lafayette; seven grandchildren, Robin, Gina, Marty, Rhett, Seth, Tammy, and Donovan; and eight great grandchildren. Preceding him in death with his parents and wife Betty are three sisters, Flora Simcox, Clora Stoval, and Lois Becker; his brother, Mike Kelley Vaughn; former daughter-in-law, Brenda Vaughn; and two grandchildren, Redonna Sue Vlahos and Kelley Nichole Vaughn.
