Clinton Matthew Greer, 87, of Old Cavern Hwy., Carlsbad, NM, passed away on Saturday morning, October 1, 2016 at his home. Celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the West Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Pastor Dick Means of Cavern Baptist Church and Clinton's grandson, Eric Greer. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery (new section) with Military Honors performed by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. on Wednesday with the family receiving guests from 5-7 p.m. at West Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.comClinton Matthew Greer was born on November 19, 1928 in Silver Valley, Texas to Ross and Mildred (Mitchell) Greer. He married Frances Cope in November, 1960. They moved to New Mexico in the early 60's and raised their family. Clinton served his country during the Korean War in the US Navy stationed on the USS Polluk AKS #4. After serving his country in the Navy, Clinton married his wife and eventually moved from Texas to Artesia to pursue a career in the potash mine industry. They settled in Carlsbad where they finished raising their family and started the legacy of having the Greer family get togethers in their home on Old Cavern Hwy, otherwise known as "Greersville". "Papaw" enjoyed having his grandchildren around and giving the younger ones rides in his lawn mower wagon. He also enjoyed growing his vegetable garden and taking care of his pecan trees. Even after his health declined, he would ask if his pecan trees were being taking care of. Clinton was also a proud member of the VFW.He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Guy Greer, sons Billy and Freddy Greer and grandson Terry Michael Mathis.Clinton is survived by his wife Frances, brother Wayne Greer, sister Margie Candler, daughter-in-law Debbie Greer, son Randy Greer and wife Denise of Carlsbad, daughters Kathy Kessler of Carlsbad, Joyce Nichols and husband Kevin of Odessa, TX, and Teresa Mathis and husband Terry of Carlsbad. Grandchildren Leslie Lewis and husband Marty, Eric Greer and wife Terra, Kellie Greer, Pam Munro and husband Kelly, Russell Greer, Justin Wagner and wife Tanna, Trey Wagner and Kayla Busby, Shellie Harkness, Cody Greer, Terrie Sheets and husband Brad, Alisha Granger and husband Tuffy, Natosha Temple and Rob Briggs, Leon Gongre and wife Felicia, Michael Gongre and wife Shannon, Nicky Gongre, Matthew Mathis and wife Danielle, and William Mathis, 37 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.His grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers for their Papaw.
