Charles Wayne Achuff of Lima Estates passed away on November 29, 2016. He was born on July 13, 1927 in Glen Riddle, PA, to Charles Achuff and Julia Andrews Johannes. Wayne married his Media High School sweetheart, Carolyn Yvonne Stavrum, and they raised their 5 children in Glen Riddle where they enjoyed open fields for riding their horses. Together in 1964, they established the Jackson Field Horseshow to benefit the new Riddle Memorial Hospital. Wayne served in the United States Navy, December, 1, 1944 – April, 1946, in the Pacific Theater during World War II spending time on the islands of Okinawa, Peleliu, and Guam. He was called back to active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War and served until April, 1951. He was a chef in the Navy and after his service, he studied food preparation and became certified as a chef through the Culinary Institute of America. He worked in many restaurants over the years and in different places, including the Jersey Shore and Camden, South Carolina. He established a restaurant and a brand, The Brass Ladle, at Olde Ridge Village in Concordville, Pennsylvania. Looking to retirement, Wayne and Yvonne moved to Savannah, Georgia, in 1983 where they owned and operated the Sophisticated Palate for 10 years before retiring to Camden, South Carolina. He lost his beloved wife to cancer in 1999. Wayne returned to PA at Chadds Ford where he met and married Alice Russell Thomas to whom he was devoted until she died in 2009. Then, Wayne moved to Lima Estates where he reconnected with many old friends and met many new ones, including Peg Smith, whose love and companionship gave richness to the last years of his life. Wayne is predeceased by his sister, Julia Wickersham. He is survived by his 5 children, Charles Wayne (Skipper) Achuff, Jr. (Kathleen) of Lima and Camden, SC, Carolyn Duff of Columbia, SC; Nancy Coffman (Ken) of West Chester, Sherri Quigley of Chadds Ford, and Douglas Achuff (Barbara) of Pottstown. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and their spouses and 10 great grandchildren, all who loved him very much. His love of history, strong faith and strong will to live a good life, incredible work ethic, sense of humor, and enjoyment of a well prepared meal are values he passes to the generations that follow him. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at Lima Estates on December 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors immediately after the service in the Wyeth Room. Rigby Harting Hagan Funeral Home is in charge. The family thanks the wonderful caregivers at Lima Estates for competent, gentle, and respectful care of their Poppy.
