Charles "Charlie" Nelson, Jr., 79, of Juneau, Alaska, passed away, Tuesday, October 20, 2015 in Anchorage.A celebration of his life will be held at Alaskan Memorial Park & Mortuary at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 28. Friends and family may call from 5:00-8:00 on Tuesday at Alaskan Memorial Park & Mortuary.Charlie was born on April 24, 1936 in Craig, Alaska to Charles and Nancy Nelson. Following high school, he served our country in the US Army from 1958 to 1960 where he earned a Good Conduct Medal. Once leaving the Army, Charlie received Electronics Communications training at the RCA Institute in New York.Following his training at RCA, Charlie began his career working at NASA at Gilmore Creek in Fairbanks. In 1973, Charlie moved the family to Juneau. While working for AT&T Alascom, Charlie served as the Union Steward for the Teamsters. Even after his retirement, he was a regular visitor to Lena Point and was often seen showing his support at Union rallies and political events.Charlie was an avid fisherman. Whether he was the Skipper on a purse seiner, fishing for King Crab, or sport fishing with his children and grand-children – he was intense and competitive, but he also showed his leadership quality by being a great mentor and teacher. While his teaching style occasionally included his sitting back and laughing to himself while his pupils worked things out on their own, he always led by example. Occasionally, while delivering nuggets of wisdom, his teaching style would include a string of profanities – but it was always followed by his signature laughter.Intense, nurturing, dedicated, prideful and filled with laughter. Those are the traits that Charlie will be most remembered for.Charlie is survived by many family members including his sons Charles Nelson III, Jeffrey R.Nelson, Michael (Michelle) Nelson and Jonathan (Collette) Nelson; his wife Mary Nelson; Charlene Nelson; his siblings Christina Mullenax, Michael Nelson, Daniel Nelson, Cheryl McFarlane; as well as many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Nelson, Sr.; his mother Nancy Nelson; his brother-in-law Sam Mullenax; his son David Nelson; and his first wife Marlene Hopkins.
