Charles Mullis Obituary

Aug 14, 1928 - Aug 09, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Charles W. (Chuck) Mullis was the epitome of a farm boy success. He was born on August 14, 1928 to a homesteaded farm family in Kansas. He had the drive and intelligence to complete a bachelor's degree in Mathematics (University of Missouri at Kansas City 1950) and follow it with a Master's degree in Physics (University of Florida 1955) and a Master's degree in Business Administration (Indiana University 1968). Drafted into the Army for Korea in 1950, he was sent to White Sands Proving Ground (before it was renamed White Sands Missile Range in 1959), where he later became one of the Broomstick Scientists working to develop the US rocket and space program. He retired from civil service in January of 1993 after over 27 years of service and shared twenty years of retirement with his wife Gale of 62 years, until, as he liked to say, "she became an angel". He died Saturday, August 9 from complications following a failed surgical bone fusion. He is preceded in death by his wife Gale and a grandson, Keaton Lee. He is survived by his older brother James B. Mullis II, and his three children, Linda G. Specht, Charles W. Mullis II, and Galen H. Mullis as well as 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson. Cremation will be followed by a private family ceremony. Please send any donations in his memory to Alcoholics Anonymous.
