Longtime Las Vegas resident and pharmacist Charlie Hillis of the famous Murphey's Drug Store, peacefully passed away on Wednesday Dec. 17, 2014, in Albuquerque at the age of 71. He was born on April 19, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas to the late Charles L. and Mary Ellen Hillis. Charlie was a graduate of Andrews High School, North Texas State University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University School of Pharmacy. Charlie was married to Tren Knight in Frederick, Okla. on Sept. 12, 1964, and together they had two sons, Sam H. Hillis and Chas R. Hillis and one daughter, Jennifer L. Hillis (deceased). Charlie came to Las Vegas in 1975, worked with John and Sketch Moore at Murphey's Drug Store, later becoming the owner from 1979-2001. Charlie continued to practice pharmacy in Las Vegas until his retirement in 2010. In his 30 years in the community he was well-known as a pharmacist, great line dancer and a supporter of local athletics. He enjoyed playing poker, bridge and golf, but the most enjoyment came from watching his children and grandchildren play a variety of sports that took him and Tren all over the state of New Mexico.Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lee Hillis and Mary Ellen Heidler-Hillis; daughter, Jennifer L. Hillis and one sister, Leigh Baker.He leaves behind his wife, Tren Hillis of the family home in Las Vegas; two sons, Sam Hugh Hillis and wife, Mari Liette and Chas Hillis; his pride and joy grandchildren, Charles Devon, Shayla Liette and Gentry Nicole; one brother, John Hillis (Pat); two sisters, Vickie Blundell (Ronnie) and Jana Smith (Kyle); brothers-in-law Cecil Baker and Dwayne Knight; sister-in-law, Patricia Goodknight. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.Funeral services for Charlie will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist Church located on the corner of University and Eighth Street.
