Charles "Chuck" Ellsworth Lee, 88 died on September 27, 2016, in Seattle, WA. He was born on November 13, 1927, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Thomas and Mabel Lee, and is survived by brothers, Jack (Anne) and Jim (Marj) Lee and Wayne Long. Athletic from a young age Chuck excelled in swimming, football, horseback riding, ice skating, broom hockey, snow skiing, boxing, and gymnastics in Denver, Colorado. In 1944 at age 17 Chuck joined the Navy and was recruited to play football. He served on board the USS Mobile which landed in Nagasaki, Japan in August 1945 days after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He suffered from the effects of radiation all his life. In 1946 he was stationed in Everett, WA where the Mobile was decommissioned. He resumed playing football and swam for the Navy and lettered in both. He was released from active duty in 1948, but was recalled in 1950. Stationed at Sand Point Naval Air Station Base in Seattle, WA as survival training manager, he was awarded ALL-Navy Man of the Year. Chuck was a trainer for the USA and British ice skating teams for the 1952 Olympics in Norway and the World Championships in Paris. A champion water skier, Chuck could be found competing in ski tournaments on the west coast. In 1952 he married Sally Fletcher and they raised three daughters. He coached the base swim team to two championships. In conjunction with KOMO TV he ran a waterfront safety program until his release from active duty in 1956. Chuck started the Chuck Lee Swim School in Everett, WA in 1957, where he coached youth to national swimming championships and taught skin diving and water ballet. Chuck also started the first Search & Rescue unit in Snohomish County. Active in the community, he was voted Outstanding Jaycee for two years in a row. In 1961, Chuck moved the Chuck Lee Swim School to Gold Creek Park in Woodinville, WA. As general manager he was involved in the design of the park. Over the years Chuck trained thousands, young and old, to swim. The family moved to Redmond, WA in 1967 when Chuck became director of public relations for Tyrrell's Pet Food. With a group of talented media and marketing professionals Chuck, known as "the promoter", started Professionals Communi-cations in 1981 producing educational and public service announcements and recycling videos. One of their largest accounts was the Evergreen State Fair. A project he was especially proud of was DOA, A World of Choices, a drug and alcohol program for teens. Chuck received an honorary Alaskan Native appreciation award for the DOA program in Alaska. Chuck had a love of music and photography as well as a passion for health and fitness. He became a personal trainer after retiring from marketing which he continued to do into his eighties. His photos were published in the Seattle Times, Sammamish Valley News and many other publications. Chuck had boundless energy and considered everyone to be family. Charles E. Lee is survived by his daughters: Marcia (Bob) Bumke, Shelby Lee Mooney, Michaelann Lee (Chris Miller) and Larry Stair; grandchildren: Joseph Burt, Jentzen (Melissa Davis) Mooney, Jacob Mooney (Katy Hogan), Tony Burt, Roisin (Danny) Huang and Haley Bumke; great grandchildren: Jaden Mooney, Luna Mooney, Francis Hogan- Mooney, Archer Hogan-Mooney and Mia Huang. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Thomas Lee and brother, Tom Lee. There will be a Memorial service for Chuck Lee on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at the Redmond Presbyterian Church, 10020 166th Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98052.
