Charles "Charlie" Edward Hallaganage 93, passed away on October 2, 2016. He had been a resident of Zionsville Meadows for the past five years. He was born on December 24, 1922, in Palestine, Crawford County, Illinois to Samuel B. Hallagan and Pauline Mayer Thisselle Hallagan. Charlie grew up in Palestine and graduated from High School there in 1940. After high school he enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. He was drafted into World War II in 1943 and served in five campaigns in Europe and Africa with the 36th Engineer (Combat) Regiment, including: Anzio; Rome-Arno; the invasion of Southern France; the Ardennes; and Central Europe, he ended the war in Innsbruck, Austria. After an Honorable Discharge he went to work at Reich's Department Store in Dayton, Ohio, where he met and married Mary Jane Wise of West Terre Haute, Indiana.  Their first child, Polly Susan, was born in Dayton in 1952. The family moved to Indianapolis where Charles had a long career with L.S. Ayres and Company, retiring as Director of Visual Presentations (Display). He subsequently worked at Davidson's Department Store.After retirement he, Mary Jane, and Polly became deeply involved in Indianapolis theater and opera designing and building costumes and sets for many plays: most notably costuming the casts for the presentations of "Amadeus" and "Joseph and The Many Colored Dream Coat" at the Indiana Repertory Theater. He was a key advisor to the Indiana State Museum in their re-creation of the L.S. Ayres Tearoom and remained socially active with other Ayres' former employees. In 2015 he was able to participate in the Indy Honor Flight of WWII veterans to Washington D.C. and visit the WWII Memorial.His Half-Brother William Thisselle in 1937; Mother Pauline in 1941; Father Samuel in 1949; Half-Brother Robert R. Thisselle in 1972; Brother Frank in 1987; Daughter Polly in 1995; and his Wife Mary Jane in 1996 preceded Charlie in death. He is survived by his Son, Robert E. Hallagan, Col, U.S. Army Retired and Daughter-in-Law Debra Hallagan of Scottsdale, Arizona, and his Grandchildren Emily S. Hallagan and Christopher E. Hallagan of Orlando, Florida.Services will be private.
