She died on August 13, 2017 at Allen Morgan Health Center, Memphis, Tennessee. She was the fourth of the five children of the late Chief Justice Alan McClarty Prewitt and Mariamne Ryan Prewitt.Carolyn attended the public schools of Hardeman County, graduating from Bolivar Central High School, where she was a noteworthy member of the school's girls' basketball team. Growing up as part of a large, supportive family in a West Tennessee county seat town-where school, church (Bolivar Methodist), the town square, and the homes of friends all were within walking distance-instilled in Carolyn a Christian ethic that was evident throughout her life and produced friendships that lasted into her late adult years.In the Fall of 1946, Carolyn began an eventful and enjoyable four years at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Her friendly smile, welcoming personality, and genuineness-traits that distinguished her throughout her life-led to an active campus role. She was a Kappa Delta, three times named a Favorite, selected as one of the five prettiest girls at Ole Miss, an ROTC Battalion Sponsor, Secretary of the Executive Council of the Associated Student Body, Treasurer of YWCA, and Vice President of Mortar Board.In her senior year, Carolyn was named Miss Ole Miss and elected to the Hall of Fame, two of the highest honors an Ole Miss student can attain.After graduating from Ole Miss, Carolyn taught in the public schools of Jackson, Tennessee, and Greenwood, Mississippi, and at Miss Hutchison's School in Memphis. She then broadened her areas of experience with stints at WHBQ Radio, Boyle Investment Company, Kenneth Kimbrough, Interior Decorator, and E. C Denaux, Inc., Interior Decorators. Time spent with the two decorating firms produced knowledge and taste that, in later years, were evident in her home.On February 19,1961, she and James L. Boren, Jr. (Jim) had their first date. On October 27 of that year they were married. They have one child, Dudley Prewitt Boren Selinger (Jonathan P.). Dudley and Jon have two children, Caroline Boren Selinger and Lucas Gregory Selinger.In 1964, Carolyn and Jim joined Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis. Soon they became members of the forerunner of today's Chapel Sunday School Class and Carolyn became a member of the Rebekah Circle. She was an active participant in both the Chapel Class and the Rebekah Circle so long as her health permitted. She also took part in Bible studies and benefited especially from a home Bible study with three close friends.Her primary interests were family, home, church, dining out with friends, travel, tennis, and reading. She was a Sustaining Member of Le Bonheur Club, Member and Past President of Le Bonheur Club's Travel Study Club, Member and Past President of The Memphis Book Club, and Member of The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Alan McClarty Prewitt, Jr., and her sister, Lillian Prewitt Jones. She is survived by her husband, her daughter, her son-in-law, her granddaughter, her grandson, her brother, Thomas Ryan Prewitt, Sr., and her sister, Mariamne Prewitt Council. In addition, she is survived by ten nieces and nephews, their spouses, their children, and their grandchildren.The family is grateful to the staffs of Allen Morgan Health Center and Attendant Care Services and to Nurse Practitioner Carol Simmons for their knowledgeable, compassionate care. Special words of appreciation are due the personal attendants who loved Carolyn and constantly saw to her comfort and needs: Michelle Harris (5 years), Mary Tate (5 years), Brenda Houston, and Willie Mae Fleming.Private graveside services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.
