Carolyn M. Strohmeyer Womack peacefully died at her home on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, after fighting a difficult and sudden illness. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Lake View Baptist Church with burial to follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Pastor Clarence Kelly will officiate at the service. Carolyn was born on March 8, 1931, in Mesa, Ariz., to Charles Frederick Strohmeyer and Lydia May Glenn. Her father was a full-blood German whose grandparents immigrated to America in the 1800's. Her mother also was German and Dutch and a descendant of those who survived the Mormon exodus to Utah, known as the Mormon Trail. Carolyn graduated from Mesa High School in 1950. After moving to Carlsbad, N.M., she met the love of her life and married Robert Harry Womack of Claremore, Okla., on July 26, 1950. They lived in Carlsbad when their first child, John Charles Womack, was born March 31, 1951. Carolyn and Bob relocated to Mesa, Ariz., where their second child, Sandra Gail Womack, was born on Aug. 25, 1952. After traveling to Wichita, Kan., a newborn son, Davey Joe Womack, was born Jan. 2, 1954, and died two days later. Carolyn and Bob were given a second son with the birth of Billy Dean Womack, born on Jan. 19, 1956, in Wichita. Carolyn and Bob were loving and supportive parents. So much so they helped raise a grandchild by adopting Richard Dale Womack, born on Jan. 3, 1969, in San Angelo, Texas. Most of her life, Carolyn was a working mother and held many service-related positions. After the family moved to San Angelo, Texas, she was subsequently employed by R.G. Barry's, Corp., where she worked until retirement. After retirement, she began serving the community as a school crossing guard for the City of San Angelo, spending most of her time at San Jacinto Elementary's Pulliam Street crossing. Teachers and parents alike saw she truly cared for and loved "her kids," as she called them. She was recognized in a 1995 Standard-Times article for braving the elements to ensure every kid made it home safely. You might say her grandmotherly ways won over the hearts of countless students, giving her hundreds of surrogate grandchildren too numerous to name. Carolyn enjoyed family, living and travel. She even went to exotic and far away places to be with ones she loved. Twice she traveled to the sweltering jungles in the Republic of Panama. More recently she traveled to see the "last frontier" in Alaska on three separate occasions. Although adventurous, her heart always returned home to San Angelo, Texas, to enjoy her pets, gardening and working in the yard. She lived a good life, and a life full of good. It was important to her that she live life with spirit, passion, dignity and self-determination. Thanks to Hospice of San Angelo, Carolyn retained many of these things right to the very end. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Davey Joe Womack; and son, Billy Dean Womack. Survivors include her son, John Womack of Wylie, Texas; daughter and husband, Sandy and Danny Clary of San Angelo, Texas; sister, Charlene Adams of Eugene, Ore.; grandson and wife, Richard and Kristi Womack of San Angelo, Texas; grandson, Christopher Womack of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter, Amy Gail Womack; granddaughter, Meagan Sue Womack; grandson, Billy Dean Womack Jr.; great-granddaughter, Karleigh Raquel Womack of San Angelo, Texas; great-grandson, Robert "Kody" Womack of San Angelo, Texas; great-grandson, Keith Maurice Womack of San Angelo, Texas; great-granddaughter, Azalia Brooks Womack; great-granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Womack; and great-grandson, Marshall Womack. Pallbearers consist of several close friends and neighbors who have graciously accepted this honor. The family would like to thank the following agencies: San Angelo Fire Department and EMS; Shannon's ER, ICU, 4th floor Step-down unit, and 6th floor Skilled Nursing Facility; and Baptist Memorial. A special thanks goes to Hospice of San Angelo (HOSA).
