Carole A. Shay 1940 - 2016Carole A. Shay, 76, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at St. John's Hospital surrounded by her loving family.Carole was born on January 18, 1940 in Peoria, IL, the daughter of Henry and Gertrude Hadank Woulfe. She married James W. Shay on February 27, 1960 in Peoria, IL. Carole graduated from Academy of Our Lady High School in 1957. She worked for the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce and later retired from the Illinois State Police in 1995. Carole was a volunteer at St. John's Samaritan Gift Shop, a member of the Illinois Old State Capital Foundation, a past member of Newcomers Club, and a member of the Elijah Iles House Foundation. She was also a member of St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Parish. Carole enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, antiquing, and spending time with her family and friends.Carole was preceded in death by her parents, her brother William Woulfe, and her sister Cynthia Ptak.She is survived by her husband James, her sons Tim (Rhonda) Shay of Springfield and Kevin (Jenny) Shay of Libertyville, her grandchildren Stephanie (Nicholas) Shay-Williams of Bloomington, Nicholas John Shay of Libertyville, Rebekka Shay of Brooklyn, NY, and Daniel James Shay of Chicago, one great-grandchild Roman Shay Williams, and her sister Dawn (Ted) Schlink of Oakland, CA.Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield.Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Parish, 700 E.
