RACINE - Carol Mae Otterbein Roth, 87, passed away on Saturday June 4, 2016 at Lakeshore Manor. Carol was born on June 21, 1928 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Frederick & Alberta (Mueller) Otterbein. Carol was educated in the public schools of Chicago. While being a mother and active faculty wife, she graduated from Carthage College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education, “on the twenty-five year plan”. She married William Passavant Roth on December 18, 1948 at Austin Lutheran Church in Chicago. Carol was employed as a special education and substitute teacher in the Racine Unified School District for several years and retired in 1991. She organized and managed professor husband Bill's many professional musical endeavors. She was a former member of Grace Lutheran Church of Kenosha, and more recently, Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Racine. Her hobbies included spending time with family and friends, reading, crafts, and mentoring others. She actively assisted in the community. She was a volunteer for Developmental Disabilities Information Services and Parents Anonymous. She was a board member for Stop Child Abuse and Neglect Program (SCAN), President of The Multiple Sclerosis Society, and charter member and President of the Grandparents Rights of Wisconsin (GROW). Carol gave of herself to others, with empathy, compassion, and generosity. She facilitated parent and family groups for those affected by multiple sclerosis, family crisis and abuse. She was instrumental in the legal process to remove corporal punishment from Racine County Public Schools. Survivors include sons Marcus (Vickie) Roth, Christopher Roth, daughter Holly Levine, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, brother Rev. Marcus Otterbein, sisters Doris Bright & Ruth Otterbein Schaediger, niece Jill Bright, and daughter Gayle Carol Roth. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, 2000 W. 6th St, Racine, WI 53405, from 10-11:00 a.m. with funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m. Committal services to be held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. In Lieu of Gifts and Flowers please make donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Holy Communion Lutheran Church.
