BYLER, Carman WarrenFebruary 8, 1923 – Oyen, ABDecember 8, 2016 – Calgary, ABCarman Warren Byler passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the age of 93 years at the Edgemont following a brief illness. Carman was born on February 8, 1923 and raised on a farm in Oyen, Alberta. He rode a horse to school and learned to drive ten head of horses to pull farm machinery. Carman went to Camrose Lutheran College to complete his high school and two-year business diploma. In 1941, he joined the Canadian Air Force and was stationed at Stanmore just outside of London, England. He met Marjorie Brookfield at a dance at the Hammersmith Palais and they married in March of 1943. Their first daughter Carole was born in England a year later. Carman, Marjorie and baby Carole returned to Canada later that year and Carman began looking for work in Calgary. His first job was with Ralph Smith Investments which began his long and successful career as a stock broker. Carman and Marjorie had three more children, Heather, Robert and David. They lived in a small bungalow in Rosedale until 1969 when they moved to Varsity Acres. Four years later, Marjorie died after a courageous battle with cancer. Carman married Glenda Harmeson in 1974. Glenda had two daughters, Tracy and Kelly, from a previous marriage. In 1982 Carman and Glenda moved to Victoria, BC. After their divorce in 1990, Carman moved back to Calgary where he met Frances Levitt. Carman and Frances were married in December 2008. Carman was an exceptional swimmer and attained the highest swim award given be the Canadian Red Cross at the time. Many families were the lucky recipients of his swimming lesson instruction. His love of swimming continued into his eighties where he could be seen regularly swimming laps at the Glencoe Club pool. Carman was also an accomplished square dancer and danced at the opening ceremonies for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Carman leaves his wife Frances Levitt, children Heather (Allen) Hachey, Robert (Susan) Byler, David (Carol) Byler; stepchildren Tracey and Kelly Harmeson; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carman was predeceased by his parents Warren and Isabelle (Hartwell) Byler; his brother Wesley Byler, sisters Mary Code, Evelyn Cook and Iva Inman; and his daughter Carole Holman. At Carman's request there will not be a Memorial Service. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful caregivers at the Edgemont, All About Seniors and Classic Lifecare for their compassionate care of Carman in his last years.
