Carlton Richard (Dick) Allen, 95, of Cary, NC passed away on February 19, 2016. Dick was born on July 21, 1920 on the family farm in Verona, NC to the late George Allen and Polly Fisher. At the age of 19 after graduating from Dixon High School, he left the farm and joined the Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer after 21 years of service. It was in the Navy where he met the love of his life, Peggy and they were married 56 years prior to her death in 2002.While serving in the Navy, Dick was awarded the American Defense Medal, China Service Medal, Japanese Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and American Area Medal. After retiring from the Navy, Dick enrolled in NC State University to obtain his college degree. He often commented that it was rather unique to have to work toward a college degree while his two sons were in high school and junior high school. After obtaining a degree in Recreation and Parks Administration he went to work with the NC State Employees Credit Union before finally retiring from the NC Department of Administration under the Administration of Governor Bob Scott.Dick is survived by his two sons, Terry and his wife Beverly of Cary and Tod and his wife Carla of Raleigh. Four grandchildren, Jennifer Rose (and husband David) of Apex and Tyler Allen (and wife Amanda) of Clayton, Parker Allen of Raleigh and Molly Allen and her finance Eric Faire of Charlotte. In addition, he is survived by three great grandchildren, Katelyn and Ryan Rose and Isabel Allen.Dick served as a deacon in the Hayes Barton Baptist Church and was a member for the past 56 years. In addition, he was a charter member of MacGregor Downs Country Club where he spent many hours playing golf with his many good friends. He was also a member of the Raleigh Sertoma Club, did volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and was a 32nd degree Mason.The Allen family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Woodland Terrace and the loving care they provided Dick for the past nine years while he was a resident. In addition, they would like to thank Liberty HomeCare and Hospice Services for their professional care in his final days.A private family graveside service will be held at Raleigh Memorial Gardens at 10:00 AM, Wednesday February 24 and a public memorial service will be held at Hayes Barton Baptist Church at 1:00 PM. Visitation will follow.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Barton Baptist Church at 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27608.
