Sgt. Major Carlos Cavazos, Jr. retired, passed away at home on September 1, 2016 at the age of 88. He was born on the La Parra Ranch east of Sarita, Texas on November 23, 1927. He now joins his wife, Jennie L. Cavazos of 59 years whom we lost in June 2016 in eternal peace. He entered the Marine Corps in December 1945 with his first duty station in the Marine Barracks, at Pear Harbor, Hawaii in 1946. He served two tours in Korea with B Company, 1st Marine Regiment 1950-1951 and F Company 2nd Battalion 7th Marine 1953-1954. He also served two tours in Vietnam with the Radio Relay and Construction Company 5th Communication Battalion 1967-1969 and Headquarters Company 3rd Marine Reconnaissance Battalion 1970-1972. During his distinguished military career, he was a drill instructor and recruiter. He was assigned to the Marine Corp Air Station in Yuma in 1969. He served with Headquarters Battery 5th Light Anti Aircraft Missile Battalion, Headquarters Battery 2nd Light Anti Aircraft Missile Battalion, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron Marine Aircraft Group. He retired in November 1975 after 30 years of proud and dedicated service. He graduated from Arizona Western College and attended Pima Community College. He started working at the Yuma Proving Ground until he retired again in 1990. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 19, Fleet Reserve Association and the "Chosin Few." Carlos is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Stephan, granddaughter, Heather Stephan-Pratt, and grandson, Kyle Stephan. Also surviving are his 5 great grandchildren and 4 sisters. He will live in our hearts forever. He was an amazing son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and one fine Marine. OORAH! The viewing, service and burial will take place at Johnson's Mortuary on Monday, September 12, 2016 starting at 10:00 a.m.
