INDEPENDENCE – Carleta M. Schmidt, 83, of Independence, died Sunday, October 30, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.Carleta was born on January 13, 1933 in Waterloo, the daughter of Harry and Kathryn B. (Wilson) Quinn. She was a 1951 graduate of La Porte City High School. On February 9, 1957 she married Lawrence L. Schmidt in La Porte City, and they later made their home in Independence. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, and was an active member in the ILCW. She also spent many years volunteering with Cedar Valley Hospice. She enjoyed working with her hands and always had a craft project to keep her busy.She is survived by her children: Linnea Ryherd, Kyle Schmidt, Joel Schmidt, all of Independence, and Amy Schmidt, Apple Valley, Minn.; three grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.Carleta was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence; a son Collon Quinn; daughter Lisa Schmidt; a granddaughter Jennifer Ryherd; two brothers: Arnold and Lawrence Quinn; and a sister, Shirley Underwood.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating. Burial will be held in Wilson Cemetery.
