Carl William GaarslandMarch 2, 1935 - February 7, 2015Carl William Gaarsland, age 79, of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away peacefully of natural causes and with his loving family surrounding on February 7, 2015. He was born on March 2, 1935 in Battle Lake, Minnesota to Agnes Christine Gaarsland.Carl attended grade school at two different schools that each were only one room that held all eight grades with one teacher. There was no electricity or plumbing. He also attended Battle Lake High. Carl later earned his GED from Idaho State University.Carl was raised on a farm in Minnesota and then left home when he was sixteen years old to work on dairy farms. He learned the value of hard work as he milked one hundred to three hundred cows three times a day. He also worked for his brother-in-law raising turkeys until he entered the military. Carl also drove long haul for Garrett Freight Lines for 25 years and Doug Andrus for about 10 years.Carl served in the US Army. He was stationed at Ft Bliss, Texas and Camp Chaffee, Kansas. He then was stationed two years at Ft McFerson, Georgia where he drove staff cars for officers, mostly general and pentagon personnel and foreign dignitaries.Carl married Sara Lee Ricker. They were married for 57 years before she passed away.Carl loved fishing at Chesterfield and Henry's Lake, snowmobiling, camping and going south for the past 20 years.Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brother-in-law and sister. He is survived by three sons, Robert and Hugh (Kim) of Pocatello, Idaho and Michael of Boise, Idaho; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one brother, David (Linda) of Battle Lake.Cremation has been completed through Downard Funeral Home, 241 North Garfield, Pocatello, Idaho. No services are currently be planned. There will be a family gathering at a latter time.Friends who wish may send donations in Carl's name to the Idaho Kidney Center.
