RACINE - Carl J. Sorensen, 91, passed away on Sunday February 12, 2012 at his residence with his son by his side. Carl was a lifelong resident of Racine, born on September 23, 1920 to the late Carl C. and Ella P. (nee: Schmidt) Sorensen. He attended public schools, graduating from Washington Park High School "Class of 1940". As a young man he had varied interests in outdoor activities, which included hunting and fishing. At the age of 16 he took up ski jumping that he continued until the age of 38, and held the hill record at Peninsula State Park, located in Fish Creek, Wisconsin that still stands to this day. Carl enjoyed bicycle racing which he held many titles including Midwest Champion. He was a game warden based out of Medford, Wisconsin. Carl was also an accomplished skeet shooter with over 200,000 registered targets. Which lead to many titles including his Senior World Championship Title, and his induction into the Wisconsin Skeet Shooters Hall of Fame. Carl was known for his musical talent and interest, especially classical piano On January 24, 1942 he was united in marriage to Anita Gibbs. Carl proudly served in the U. S. Army, 10th Mountain Division during World War II. Carl was one of four men from the Racine Ski Club to volunteer for the first United States Mountain Troops training at Camp Hale in Colorado. Upon returning to Racine, Carl was employed by Massey Harris Tank Plant, Hartmann Luggage Co., Jensen Metal Products and Greene Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1986. In his later years, Carl became a member of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Carl is survived by his son, Carl "Chris" Sorensen, grandson, Troy P. Sorensen and his mother, Lyn Sorensen, two sisters, Emma Myer of Middleton and Barbara (Rodger) Nelson of Milwaukee; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Gibbs of Mercer and Mary Gibbs of Pasadena, CA. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Anita on July 3, 2006; parents, sister, Jane Keller; and two brothers-in-law, John Gibbs and Donald Gibbs. In keeping with Carl's wishes, cremation will be held. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with full military honors at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.
