Betty Scott Barber Smith, 92, died at The Cypress of Charlotte, Stewart Health Center, on December 12, 2016, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on April 30, 1924, to Agnes Ferebee Barber and Wade Barber Sr. of Pittsboro, North Carolina.Betty Scott graduated from Pittsboro High School in 1941 as an outstanding member of the debate team. She continued her education at UNC-Greensboro, graduating with a BA degree in History. While in college she was active in Student Government and excelled academically. Betty Scott's proudest accomplishment was being chosen to escort Eleanor Roosevelt on a campus tour. After graduation, Betty Scott accepted a job in Charlotte working for the N.C. Presbyterian Synod establishing youth programs. During this time she met and married Robert James Smith Jr. of Charlotte. They were lovingly devoted to each other for 67 years. Betty Scott taught at Sharon High School for one year and later at South Mecklenburg High School for five years. She was a favorite teacher and student advisor. In her late fifties Charter Properties recruited her to help promote marketing at 800 Cherokee.Betty Scott was a faithful, long time member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church. Active involvement in the faith community was a top priority throughout her life. She served as an Elder and received the Honorary Life Membership Award given by the women of the church in recognition of her outstanding service. Betty Scott also served the community from neighborhood United Way drives to participation on various boards such as the Junior League, the YWCA, the Alexander Children's Home, and the Charlotte Symphony Guild. She also enjoyed her membership at the Mint Museum and the UNCG Alumni Association. Betty Scott's hobbies included tennis, reading, sewing and needlework. She was a founding member of the A and F book club and participated for 55 years.Betty Scott will always be remembered for her kindness, graciousness, service and fortitude. Her unconditional love for Bob, Betsy, Nancy, sons-in-law and four grandsons was exemplary. She also cherished her relationships with extended family and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert James Smith; sister, Mary Hayes Barber Holmes; brother-in-law, Howard Harvey Smith; and sister-in-law, Ann Smith Bertini.Betty Scott is survived by her brother, Wade Barber (Marina); daughters, Betsy Smith Weaver (Curtis), Nancy Smith Baccich (Thorn); grandsons, Curt Weaver (Anne), Rob Weaver, Thorn Baccich Jr. (Laura), Wade Baccich (Molly); great-grandchildren, Schoch Weaver, George Weaver, Anne Ferebee Weaver, and Charlie Baccich; brother-in-law, Ed Holmes; sister-in-law, Margaret Smith; and many close nieces and nephews.The family expresses thanks to Compassionate Care of Charlotte for their loving care and excellent service for many years. Their dedication to our parents was outstanding.A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 15 at 2:00 pm in the Sanctuary at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
