Betty Newton BETTY MANN NEWTON, 90, died peacefully in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina on Sunday, July 10, 2016. Mrs. Newton was born on December 15, 1925 in Greenville, South Carolina to the late Nina Griffin Mann and former Greenville Mayor Alfred Cleo Mann. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1943 and attended Agnes Scott College and graduated from Furman University with a degree in Psychology. While at Furman, she was May Queen and went on to become Miss South Carolina. Mrs. Newton lived in Griffin, Georgia for 49 years where she raised her five children. She was very active in her community and served as president of the Griffin Utility Club and Dogwood Garden Club. She also served as First United Methodist Church of Griffin's first female trustee. Her passions were her children, flower arranging, and enjoying playing bridge with her friends. Mrs. Newton divided her time between Griffin, GA. and Hilton Head Island, SC. for several years until she became a full-time resident of the Tidepointe retirement community 12 years ago. She made friends easily and was always considered a woman of grace, strength, faith, integrity, and elegance. Her quick-witted sense of humor will be missed. Mrs. Newton is survived by five children: Henry Coleman Jackson, III of Washington, D.C., Gail Jackson Clark and her husband Ham of Markham, Virginia, Thomas Lewis Jackson and his wife Sydney of Athens, John Robert Jackson and his wife Elissa of Austin, Texas and James Stanley Jackson and his wife Vivian of Atlanta. Ten grandchildren survive: Dr. Lanier Burns Jackson and his wife Anne of Charleston, South Carolina, Thomas Lewis Jackson, Jr. and his wife Emily of Atlanta, Laura Clark Katona and her husband Dave of New York City, Percy Hamilton Clark, IV and his wife Katie of Washington, D.C., John Robert Jackson, Jr. of New York City, Frank Coleman Jackson, Daniel Griffin Jackson and James Harrison Jackson, all of Austin, Ellen Hope Jackson of Washington, D.C. and Merrill Frances Jackson of Atlanta. Two great grandchildren survive: Thomas Bryan Jackson and William Burns Jackson, both of Charleston. Her brother Dr. Thomas Charles Mann and his wife Margaret of Greenville also survive. She was predeceased by brothers Alfred Cleo Mann, Jr., James Robert Mann, Joseph Griffin Mann and John Plyer Mann. She was predeceased by the father of her children, Henry Coleman Jackson,Jr. and husbands John Arthur Swartout and John Trammell Newton. Graveside services will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin at 11:00 on Saturday, July 16, 2016. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1401 Maple Drive, Griffin, Georgia 30224or to the charity of one's choice.
