Betty J. McGlassonAugust 1, 1911 - August 10, 2017Salem - Betty J. McGlasson passed away peacefully in the loving arms of her son Allan and a Visiting Angel caretaker on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the age of 106. Betty (Elizabeth Ann Jelinek) was born on August 1, 1911 in Crete, Nebraska to parents Josef and Mary (Nedela) Jelinek. She came from a large family which included six girls and two boys. The importance of family was ingrained in her at an early age. She shared memories of large family gatherings at her grandparents on Sundays, and, in her adult years, she regularly hosted many holiday and family gatherings in her home.Betty started school in Crete, but she moved to Dallas, Oregon as a sophomore in high school to live with an older sister and brother-in-law. She graduated from Dallas High School and furthered her education at Oregon State University. She graduated in 1933 with a teaching degree in Business. Her first teaching assignment was at Dallas High School where she taught typing and shorthand. In 1938, she transferred to Corvallis High School, where she met her future husband, Max McGlasson.Betty and Max were married in February, 1942. Both continued to teach until the arrival of their son, Allan. Soon after, they moved to Dallas, Oregon to take over a family business. Their three daughters were born in Dallas. In 1954, the family moved to LaGrande, Oregon where they became owners of a local stationery store. In LaGrande, they were active members of the First Presbyterian Church and Betty became involved in many civic groups. She had a true servant's heart and often provided meals and companionship for homebound senior citizens. She built her life on faith, family, fellowship, and service.Betty taught business classes at LaGrande High School while earning her master's degree from Eastern Oregon University. All four children graduated from LaGrande High School and she helped support them as they went on to earn college degrees.When Betty retired from teaching, Max sold the store and they moved to Salem in 1979, closer to family and their Willamette Valley roots. They enjoyed traveling together, growing a garden, and fixing up a beach home in Pacific City. Betty's hobbies included sewing, crossword puzzles, solitaire, and embroidery until macular degeneration made these hobbies difficult. However she continued to enjoy watching sports on television, especially her beloved Beavers! For over 80 years, she supported OSU teams with enthusiasm and considerable sideline coaching.After Max's death in 2003, Betty moved to a retirement community in Salem where she enjoyed line dancing, beanbag baseball, all social events, PEO, and traveling. For the past three years, Betty lived with son, Allan, and his wife, Shari, in their home in Salem. Survivors include son Allan and wife Shari, daughters Marolyn and husband Tom Blaylock, Maxine and husband Tom Corrigan, and Kathleen and husband Mike Kinslow. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, August 26th at First Presbyterian Church 770 Chemeketa St. NE Salem. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to PEO Chapter ET, 1585 Madrona Ave S, Salem, OR 97302. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
