Bernard George Lesnick, a lifelong resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2016, with family by his side, at TBRHSC. He was born on June 9, 1923 in Port Arthur to May and Bernard Lesnick, who raised him, along with his siblings, on the homestead in Blake Township. During World War II, Bernard enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces. In his younger years, he worked at bush camps for the pulp and paper industry and drove for various trucking firms. He retired from his career as a security guard at Great Lakes Forest Products (Resolute) in 1988. Bernard married on June, 21, 1956 to the love of his life, Frieda Maria, who was his endearing spouse for 57 years before her passing in 2013. He valued his family above all else and we will all remember him for his kindness, generosity and humour as well as his love of hockey, baseball and a good game of crib. Bernard will be missed greatly by his children Joe (Lillian) Harris, Mary Backstrom, Judy (Ed) Woodbeck, Marlene (Martin) Warwick, Arnie (Doreen), Gerry (Rita), Kenny (Cindy), Benny, 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, brothers Fred (Betty), Richard (Violet) and sister Margaret (Roger) Hurst, sister-in-law Hilda Estey and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Frieda, parents May and Bernard, sisters Constance, Gertie (Peter) Iwanonkiw, May (Fern) Groulx, Agnes Parker (Bob), brothers Clarence (Sophie), Leonard (Mae) and son-in-law Raymond Syrjanen. The family would like to thank the staff at McKellar Place, Sister Leila Greco, St Joseph's Hospital, St Joseph's Transitional Unit and Hogarth Riverview Manor 5S for the compassionate care that Dad received from them during his stay. Family and friends are invited to gather at West Thunder Community Centre, 915 Edward St. S. on Saturday, October 15 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, for a Celebration of Bernard's life. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to Heart & Stroke or Parkinson Canada.
