Benny G. HuertaDelta Twp.Loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017. He was born on 8/5/1926 in Somerville, TX to Bernabe and Leonarda G. Huerta. He left Somerville for Chicago, IL after the death of his father in order to find work. From there he came to Eaton Rapids, MI to pick pickles when he was 16 year old. While here in 1945, he was drafted for World War II and proudly served his country while stationed in the Philippines and then on to Japan as the war ended. Once back state side, a friend of the family gave him the name and address of Nelda Cuellar from Corpus Christi, TX so they can start writing to each other. In August 1960, Benny took a trip to Somerville and asked someone how far was it to Corpus Christi, and he made the drive. He arrived on a Tuesday and by Saturday, they were married. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage until Nelda's passing on 2/23/2014. They are now reunited again in heaven. Benny enjoyed gardening and keeping busy. As dad always said "there is always something to do around the house", going to church, baseball and was a loyal Detroit Lion fan. He played city league baseball for the Lansing Cardinals in the Latin American Baseball League in the 1950's. He worked for GM Fisher Body for 38 years. Benny is survived by 3 children Elizabeth (Jorge Contreras), Delia (Robert Reeves) and Nora (Brett Haddock); 3 grandchildren Melissa and Danielle Reeves and Jorge Contreras Jr. He is also survived by one sister Trina Villegas and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Nelda, infant son, sisters Margarita Huerta, Margo Lira and Helen Anguiano. We would like to thank both our parents for the love and support given to us through the years and for memories that will last forever. Special thank you to Anna and Jessica from Ingham County Rehab Services; also to Heather, A'Lynne, Asia and Erica from Optimal Medical and Tammy from Great Lakes Caring for the exceptional care given to Benny during the last weeks of his life.The Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Cristo Rey Church with Rev. Fr. Fredrick Thelen as Celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Palmer, Bush and Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel. Visitation will continue at the church Wednesday at 9:30a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please consider donations to Cristo Rey Church or Great Lakes Caring in Benny's name.
