Barbara Archer Obituary

Aug 12, 1920 - Oct 26, 2022

This obituary is administered by:
Archer, Barbara M. Barbara Archer passed away peacefully October 8th 2016. She was born on August 11th 1920 in Holland, Michigan to Ida Cappon Maulbetsch and John F. Maulbetsch. She is survived by sons Patrick Archer and his wife Rene, Brian Archer, her grandson Elijah Archer, and her favorite dog Mahogany. She was preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) H. Archer, her father John F. Maulbetsch, her mother Ida Maulbetsch, and her brother John A. (Sonny) Maulbetsch. She attended Rochester Institute of Technology where she received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Following graduation she enlisted in the Marine Corps where she was trained to work on the hydraulic systems of the F-4U Corsair Fighter Planes during WWII. She was in the first wave of enlisted women to join the Marine Corps where she served for 11 years. She also served during the Korean War, after which time she was honorably discharged at the rank of Technical Sargent. In 1956 she married Gunnery Sargent William H. Archer. They moved to Albuquerque in 1965 making it their home. Here they raised their two sons and were married 46 years until Bill passed away in 2002. Barbara was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, volunteering for over 20 years. She started as a Cub Scout Den Mother, then volunteered with Troop 443, where both her sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. She continued volunteering with the local Great Southwest Council. She volunteered with the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, and worked as a substitute teacher for the Albuquerque Public Schools. After raising her family she was very involved in the Montgomery Park Neighborhood Association and served as president for three years. She was also a life member of the Women Marines Association, Sandia Chapter. Barbara loved University of Michigan Football, she almost never missed watching a game. Her father John Maulbetsch was an All American running back for the University of Michigan, it was a forgone conclusion you would be a Michigan fan! Her grandfather Isaac Cappon, was the first mayor of Holland Michigan. The family home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now a museum. Being the last living descendant of the Cappon family she was instrumental in providing information about growing up in the home, the family traditions, and correct decorations for the time period. She took this responsibility very seriously and was dedicated to ensuring the family history was not lost. Though being declared legally blind in her later years due to macular degeneration, she never stopped "taking care of business". She was a strong and unforgettable woman who made lasting impression on everyone who meet her. She mentored many women through her life and was very proud of their accomplishments. She was a good mother, grandmother, and friend who loved us all. She was very supportive and only wanted you to achieve to best of your ability, and she would push you to do it! You are loved very much, and will be dearly missed by your family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boys Scouts of America - Great Southwest Council, or to the Women Marines Association - Sandia Chapter. The Archer family would like to extend a special thank you to Mary Galvez, Ava Heppler, the staff at Northridge Alzheimer's Special Care Center, and Hospice De La Luz for their help and care with Barbara.
