Alvin D. AkeSept. 29, 1919 - Nov. 4, 2016SOUTH BEND - Alvin D. Ake, age 97, passed away at 9:05 pm Friday, November 4, 2016, at Hospice House, South Bend, Indiana. He retired in 1981 from Oliver-White Farm after 38 years of service. Alvin was born on September 29, 1919, in Perkins, Oklahoma, to the late Edwin and Eunice (Burke) Ake and lived in South Bend since 1941, coming from Bloomington, Indiana. On December 21, 1940, in Terre Haute, he married Ruby (Hissong) Ake, who preceded him in death on August 22, 1997. Alvin is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patty Jo and Joseph Whalen of South Bend; a granddaughter, Suzanne Foxton of Kew, England, and their children, Holly and Ted Foxton. Two brothers, Edwin and Phillip Ake, and a sister, Elma Keever, preceded him in death. Alvin was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He proudly served in the 324th Army Infantry Regiment. He was a member of American Legion Post #50; VFW Post #9820; and the Civilian Conservation Corps #105 LaPorte. Alvin was also an avid fisherman and bowler. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
