SIMICAK, Alice Ann (nee Whitty)Alice passed away unexpectedly January 7, 2017 at home in Richmond, BC at the age of 82. Alice is survived by her loving husband of 14 years, Louis, daughter Erin Rozman (Paul), stepdaughters Diane (Andy), Lisa (Tim), stepsons Neil (Kellie) and Steve, granddaughter Renzey, step-grandchildren Sandra, Shannon, Travis, Kyle, Cheyenne and Dakota, sister-in-law Cheryl Whitty, nephews Steve Bell, Steve Whitty and Brian Whitty (Kelly), nieces Susan Rempel (Nolan), Allison Reid (Jim) and Marie Whitty, and several great- nieces and great-nephews. Alice was predeceased by siblings Tony Whitty, Joy Bell, and brother-in-law Dick Bell. Alice was born on March 24, 1934 in Vancouver, BC to Joseph and Frances Whitty. She completed her schooling with post-graduate degrees from both the University of Oregon and the University of British Columbia. From an early age, Alice travelled the world as a high jumper, competing in her first Olympic Games in 1952 (Helsinki). A bronze medalist in the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Alice went on to compete in the 1956 Olympic Games (Melbourne) and won a silver medal at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago. In Alice's own words, "my jumping ability afforded me with world travels, great experiences, and lasting memories". She was thrilled to meet up with the 1956 Olympic Track Team to participate in the torch run for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. A funeral is scheduled for Friday, January 20, 2017 at 11:15 a.m. at St. Joseph the Worker, Richmond, BC, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Alice's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sport BC. The family would like to sincerely thank caregiver Theresa Lee and physician Dr. Sebastian Howie for their care and support of Alice.
