Adla Marie Snyder Obituary

Sep 24, 1930 - Jan 01, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Adla Marie Torn Snyder, 86, Independence, MO, passed away December 1, 2016. She was born on September 24, 1930, in Manor, TX just outside of Austin, the daughter of Albert Joseph & Camilla Marie Torn and granddaughter of Swedish immigrants on both sides. She attended Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Austin just a block away from the grounds of the Texas State Capitol. As a young girl, Adla assisted family picking cotton alongside migrant workers in Hutto, Texas. She graduated from Austin High School in 1948. After working an entire year at a dime store, she earned enough money to travel to Kansas City, MO, and enroll at Trinity Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing. There, she met Floyd Leroy Snyder, Jr. on a blind date. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1952. On graduation day, Floyd proposed and they were married at Gethsemane Lutheran Church on January 17, 1953. Adla Marie has worked at several hospitals but has spent most of her years as a nurse at the Kansas City VA Hospital. She retired to start a family in 1955 raising two sons and a daughter. As a full-time mom and homemaker, she continued to serve the community as a volunteer through the Junior Service League. She served as a volunteer school nurse at Hanthorn Elementary and Bridger Junior High Schools in Independence. Her service in Independence Schools in PTA and as a volunteer nurse would earn her a lifetime membership of the Missouri PTA. She would later serve as a volunteer nurse in community-based health clinics for the under-served. While others were retiring, she would start another career working for Kohl's Department Store on 39th Street and serving there for 18 years. She was a member of the Jackson County Historical Society. Adla Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd, who passed away in 2000 and a talented great-grandson, Mason Atagi, who passed away last year and who would have been a senior at William Chrisman High School this school year. She is survived by her brother, Joe Winfred Torn, and his wife Barbara of Austin, TX, her son, Floyd (Lee) Snyder III, and his wife Carol of Independence, her son, Brian Snyder, and his wife Sharon, of Independence, her daughter, Ann McGlumphy, and her husband Robert of Maple Glen, PA. She also left six grandchildren, Kristina Atagi, Floyd (Troy) Snyder IV, Laura Sturgis, Amy Snyder, Allison Lang, and Jimmy McGlumphy. Adla Marie was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren Alex, Ava, Layla, Brody, Emery, Ramey, and Ryder. She leaves behind a legacy of caring and love. Visitation will from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church 100 N. Pleasant, Independence, MO. A celebration of her life will begin at 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers we suggest donations to the Mason Atagi Scholarship Fund at the Independence School District Foundation or the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, MO. The family would like to thank Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate care.
