A.F. McDavid, 90, of Brooker, died November 6, 2008 at his home. Fred was born on May 4, 1918, in Chiefland, Florida, and spent his early years in Monteocha and LaCrosse, Florida. He went out on his own as a teenager and moved to Miami where he had various jobs driving a truck, delivering materials, and milking cows for other dairymen. He met Mildred Prediemore in 1937 while she was visiting relatives in Pompano Beach. They were married on October 17, 1937, in Harriman, Tennessee. Fred enlisted in the Coast Guard during WWII and served until the end of the War. After WWII, he started a dairy in Pompano Beach, which became one of the larger dairies in South Florida. in 1958, after he had sold his dairy, he moved back to his roots to a farm in the Brooker area. He raised beef cattle and quarter horses until his retirement in 1975. His quarter horses included Poco Stampede, the World Champion Cutting Horse, and Muncho Stampede, an AQHA Champion Cutting Horse. When he held his dispersal sale in 1972, there were 276 registered quarter horses which were sold. He was also the owner of Columbia Livestock Market in Lake City for 7 years. Fred was active in the community, serving as Director of First National Bank of Gainesville, President of the Florida Quarter Horse Association, President of the Florida Cutting Horse Association, President of Antioch Cemetery Association, and a member of the Florida Department of Agriculture Animal Industry Board. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was a Mason and Shriner for over 50 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Mildred P. McDavid, his mother Roxie Ann Lord, his father, F. M. McDavid, Sr., his sister Eloise Bennett, his brothers F. M. (Jack) McDavid, Cliff Thomas, Dan Thomas, and son-in-law Don Register. Fred is survived by his children; Terry McDavid (Ginger), of Lake City, Florida, Carolyn Green (Kenny), of Wildwood, Florida, Sue Register, of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, Don McDavid (Sherry), of Rockwood, Tennessee, and Brenda Whitehead (Henry), of Lake Butler, Florida. He is survived by 4 grandsons, 5 granddaughters, 7 great grandsons, and 6 great granddaughters. He is also survived by his devoted caregivers, Thelma Brown and Shayna Lavin. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2008, at 3:00P.M. at Antioch Baptist Church, LaCrosse, Florida.
