Emilie du Chatelet, physician, mathematician, natural philosopher, and author recently passed in Luneville, France, at the age of 43, due to childbirth. The child also passed shortly after the mother's death.

Married to Marquis du Chatelet, Emilie mothered three children, and was very dedicated to her scientific work. According to a servant who worked at Cirey-sur-Blaise, where Chatelet and Voltaire worked,  "Mme du Châtelet passed the greater part of the morning with her writings, and did not like to be disturbed. When she stopped work, however, she did not seem to be the same woman. The serious air gave place to gaiety and she gave herself up with the greatest enthusiasm to the delights of the society". When she wasn't working, she felt behaved like a typical woman of her age: she studied, gambled, and had a greedy hand.
