William Shakespeare Obituary

Apr 26, 1564 - Apr 23, 1616

" A Life Well Lived"

William Shakespeare, 52, passed on April 23, 1616. He was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden on April 26, 1564.

He married Anne Hathaway in 1582 and they lived together on Henley Street. Together they raised 3 children Susanna Hall (John Hall), Hamnet Shakespeare, Judith Quiney (Thomas Quiney).

William graduated from King's New School in 1580.

At the age of eighteen, William married Anne Hathaway, a young woman from the village of Shottery, just outside Stratford-upon-Avon.  Shakespeare's four grandchildren all died without heirs, so there are no direct descendants of his line today. Susanna and John Hall’s only daughter, Elizabeth, married twice but both marriages remained childless. His daughter Judith and her husband Thomas Quiney’s three sons all died at an early age, either in infancy or as young adults before having children.

Shakespeare's work has made a lasting impression on later theatre and literature. In particular, he expanded the dramatic potential of characterisation, plot, language, and genre. Until Romeo and Juliet, for example, romance had not been viewed as a worthy topic for tragedy. Shakespeare influenced novelists such as Thomas Hardy, William Faulkner, and Charles Dickens. Shakespeare has also inspired many painters, including the Romantics and the Pre-Raphaelites. The Swiss Romantic artist Henry Fuseli, a friend of William Blake, even translated Macbeth into German. The psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud drew on Shakespearean psychology, in particular, that of Hamlet, for his theories of human nature.

In Shakespeare's day, English grammar, spelling, and pronunciation were less standardised than they are now, and his use of language helped shape modern English. Samuel Johnson quoted him more often than any other author in his A Dictionary of the English Language, the first serious work of its type. Expressions such as "with bated breath" (Merchant of Venice) and "a foregone conclusion" (Othello) have found their way into everyday English speech.

In Summary William Shakespeare was an actor, playwright, poet, and theatre entrepreneur in London during the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean eras. He was baptised on 26 April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England, in the Holy Trinity Church. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway with whom he had three children. He died in his home town of Stratford on 23 April 1616, aged 52. " He Will Be Dearly Missed".
