William Dean JUSTICE Obituary

Mar 23, 1928 - Jan 29, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
JUSTICE, William DeanThe first Director of the Frank Erwin Center, William Dean Justice, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2016. Dean was born on March 23, 1928 in Chanute, Kansas to William Raymond Justice and Dorothy Clare Percival Justice. His parents and his only sibling, Jack Barron Justice, preceded him in death. Dean graduated with a BA in Business from Emporia State College in Kansas in 1950. Following graduation Dean enlisted in the U.S. Navy, served four years in the Korean War and returned to work in the insurance adjustment industry. In the fall of 1964, he became the first manager of the Southern Illinois University Arena in Carbondale, IL. Dean became an active member of the International Association of Auditorium Managers, was elected president and received the prestigious Charles E. McElravey Award. In 1976 Dean became the first director of The University of Texas Frank Erwin Center, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. As a result of his work in the industry, he led the way for the establishment of The Professional Touring Entertainment History Archive at the Briscoe Center for American History at UT in 1995. Dean loved the outdoors. He and his dog Scamp traveled many miles together in his RV. The state of New Mexico and national parks were their favorites. They visited or stayed in 38 of the 56 national parks and Dean preserved his memories through his love of photography. He loved listening to the wind and the birds. He loved building a campfire and roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. He loved watching the sunset and applauding the sunrise. A "Must" every spring was driving the Willow City Loop to see the Texas wild flowers. Fall Saturdays were spent at DKR Memorial Stadium, or later in life at home, watching the Longhorns play football. Through the years, he repeatedly talked about the players of the Longhorn men's and women's basketball teams. Win or lose, he was a fan. Spending time with his children and grandchildren always made Dean happy. They might camp together, fish together, play board games, enjoy nature or just be together. All of it was delightful for him. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Sharon Hooker Justice; son, Blake Albert Justice (Laurie) of Austin and grandson Grant of Idaho Falls, ID; daughter, Tracy Justice Evans (David) of St. Louis, MO and granddaughters Mallory and Kyndall; and daughter Sara Justice Hinde (John) of Murphysboro IL and twin granddaughters, Cayden and Carlisle and his very dear friend James L. Baker of Austin. A celebration of Dean's life will be held on Friday, November 18 at 1:00 pm at All Saints' Episcopal Church, Austin, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to one of the following is preferred: The Briscoe Center for American History in support of the Professional Touring Entertainment Archive, The University of Texas at Austin, 2300 Red River Street, Stop D. 1100, Austin, TX 78712 All Saints' Episcopal Church, The Clergy Discretionary Fund, 209 West 27th Street, Austin, TX 78705 Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Austin, TX 78759 Obituary and memorial guestbook available online at www.wcfish.com
