Ted lived an amazing life and was acknowledged for being a natural born leader. He was born on November 29, 1923 in Longview, Washington to Nicholas and Sylvia Furchner. As a young child, his family took the train to Reno and relocated him and his siblings, Sybil, Don and Patty. Ted attended Mount Rose Elementary, Billinghurst, and Reno High, where he met the love of his life, Patricia. They both attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He joined the US Navy in 1942 and was a Harbor Defense Radar specialist in War World II. He was deployed to the South Pacific and spent time in New Guinea and the Phillipines, and in multiple other ports. Throughout these years, he and Patricia continued to court each other, knowing that some day they would be together. In 1946, he returned to Reno and finished his education, a member of the fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, graduating in 1950. He and Patricia married in New Mexico in 1954. He obtained his masters degree in School Administration from UNR in 1960. Ted began his 30-year career with the WCSD in 1950, teaching at Northside Jr. High, Reno High, and Central Middle School. Ted later became the principal for McKinley Park, Elmcrest, and Stead Elementary where he was in service for 25 years. He helped many students overcome adversity and assisted parents that were in the military. Ted and Patricia built their home in Reno and grew their family with Nicholas in 1957 and then Lorraine in 1959. Ted loved to take his family fishing, camping, hiking and all things Tahoe. He loved the outdoors and even kept a horse and a menagerie of pets in his backyard for his children. Ted retired from the school district in 1980 and he and Patricia traveled to all 7 continents and trekked, visiting almost 100 countries! He could still recall many of his trips in detail. Ted was a very active person, so even in retirement he was always doing something. He was a great handyman, he worked part-time as a floral designer for 45 years, he was caregiver to his three wonderful grandchildren, and continued to read and educate himself daily. Ted is remembered for so many honorable achievements such as being on the Board of Directors for the Omega House, a drug treatment center, his helpfulness and his kindness to others. Ted is survived by his son Nicholas A. Furchner, of Reno, and Nick's wife Amy; his daughter Lorraine Howard and her children; Giselle of India, and her husband, Tushar; Tennille of Reno, and Chase of Reno; and great grandchild Azalea of India; and his sibling Patty Fuss of Reno and many nieces and nephews. He is preceeded in death by his bother Don; his parents Nicholas and Sylvia, his sister Sybil and his love Patricia. Services for Ted will be held with Military Honors, on Saturday, March 25, 2017 promptly at 11:00 am at The River Christian Church at 10475 W. 4th St., Reno with an internment at Mountain View Cemetery at 435 Stoker Ave., Reno immediately following. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the "Furchner Technology Nook", for Stead ES, in care of the Parent Faculty Association, would support his main goal in life that every child should have access to the finest education in our country.
