On March 19, 1937 Shirley "Nanna" Edward was born in Harlem NYC to Mary E. Jones and Robert Edwards. She graduated from Mother Cabrini High School in Manhattan, where she met her husband James Jiles and raised 3 children. She was a pilar in her community and babysat almost every child and their parents (at one point) in the neighborhood for over 30 years.
Shirley has always been the life of the party. She earned her nickname “The Diva” because she was always a sharp dresser and overall glamourous woman. She was a “Diva” in her own mind. She loved shopping and always kept herself looking good in the latest fashions. Shirley would often be seen in creased-down pants and hair to match with a dash of color or however she felt that day. Accessories were her favorite things to shop for. She had tons of jewelry, shoes, and everything else that she loved. In her free time, you could find her sitting on the porch with her favorite friends, Lee Alice and Dan having a “cold drink” and listening to music. She loved music, dancing, and to visit her family and friends. She would be caught strutting down the street to Glo’s house. Her smile and happy spirit would light up any room. One thing she never did was hold her tongue if she wanted you to know something, she was going to tell you. When she knew her, grandchildren were on their way, she would always cook her famous greens, neckbones, and hot water cornbread.
