Shawn Alan Smith, age 32, of Petoskey, formerly of Oscoda, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015. He was born on May 2, 1982 in Madisonville, Ky. to Kevin and Alona Smith. Shawn graduated from Oscoda High School in 2001 and went on to join the U.S. Army. He worked as a tracked vehicle mechanic and was a proud Iraqi War veteran. Shawn loved the woods and waters of Northern Michigan. He was an amazing athlete and a proud finisher of the AuSable River Canoe Marathon and was a budding chef and artist. Shawn enjoyed making others smile and he especially loved playing with his girls. He is survived by the girl of his heart, Erin Wiener; daughters, Kalynne and Emily Smith and their mother, Abigail Turner of Oscoda; parents, Kevin and Alona Smith of Oscoda; and brothers, Corey (Sarah) Smith of Rossville, Ga. and Kyle (Kali) Smith of Boyne Falls. Shawn is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Cayden, Raegan, Garrett, and Gwen Smith of Rossville, Ga. and Corbin and Connor Smith of Boyne Falls. A funeral service was held on Feb. 6 at Oscoda Baptist Church with Reverend Rob Nordin officiating.
