Richard L. GebhardtEDELSTEIN - Richard Lawrence Gebhardt, age 87, of Edelstein passed away and went to heaven to meet his Lord God and Lord Jesus, and to be greeted by the beloved ones who had gone before. He passed at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at UnityPoint Health-Proctor in Peoria. He was born on New Year's Eve, 1928, in Peoria to Richard and Adele (Stempfle) Gebhardt. They preceded him in death, along with one son, Ted; and one grandson, Brock Gebhardt.He married his best girl, Sandra Herman, on Aug. 4, 1956, in Peoria, and they enjoyed 60 years of life together. She survives, along with their children, Rick (Maritza) Gebhardt of Dunlap, Randy Gebhardt of Moline and Jill (Joel) Dryden of Peoria; grandchildren, Meghan, Micah (Kirianna) and Matthew Dryden, Samantha Gebhardt, Cassie and Dane Gebhardt and Rachelle and Katarina Gebhardt; one sister, Wilma Strand of Scottsdale, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.Dick graduated Hines Elementary School, Peoria High and Bradley University, where he was in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Following college, he went right into the Navy. He served in the Korean War as a Lieutenant J.G. He returned to work at Born Paint Co., then in 1959, he started Central Pool Supply, Inc. in his garage. In addition to his business, he owned and operated the Hardware Store in the Bergner's basement in Sheridan Village. Dick was a master craftsman in building two homes himself. He also took part in the building of Peoria Stadium and Peoria Expo Gardens by driving a truck all night and anything else that needed done.Dick loved a good party, was a collector of fine wine and was famous for his Steak Tartare and Caesar Salad dressing, both of which recipes were highly sought by friends, but Dick was never quite willing to reveal those recipes.He enjoyed fishing of all kinds, but especially when he was at his winter home in the Florida Keys.Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation for Dick will be Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria. Following the visitation, there will be a celebration of Dick's life at 12 noon. Pastor Joel Dryden will officiate.Memorials may be made to the Richwoods Christian Church at 8115 N.
