Oct 13, 1954 - Nov 09, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
MALCOLM RALPH M. MALCOLM, JR. (Age 62) Of Alexandria, Virginia was called home on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at his residence. He was born on October 13, 1954, in Panama to the late Ralph Sr. and Catherine (Bostick) Malcolm. Ralph migrated to the United States from Panama in 1957. His love of the aviation field was reflected in his education, where he attended The Aviation High School, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and obtained his Master's degree in Organizational Development from The American University in Washington, DC. Ralph honorably served his country for 20 years and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard. He continued his career in the aviation industry, and worked for U.S. Air, held various positions at Lockheed Martin, and was an Aviation Safety Analyst with the FAA before his untimely passing. At a very young age, Ralph's faith was always very important to him. He served as an acolyte at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Bronx, New York. He also was a talented musician, playing drums and French horn in the Bugle Corps as a young man. He also was an avid fan of jazz and other musical genres. As passionate and dedicated as he was with his career, he also was the same in his personal life. Ralph was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his family, neighbors, colleagues and friends. His love of aviation was transferred to his youngest son, Lucas. They would take special father-son bonding field trips to the local airports and train stations. He loved to celebrate special occasions, vacations and holidays with those he loved. Ralph also took time to mentor and encourage young aviation professionals and was a faithful supporter of the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Alumni Association. He is survived by his beloved wife of seven years, Birtukan (Betty) Malcolm; sons, Kevin Bolden and Lucas Malcolm; siblings, Wilfred Mairs (Doreen), Delia Mairs, Celia Acadia (Reynaldo), Walter Malcolm (Patricia), Grethel McBean (Rudolph), Diahann Malcolm (Janet) and Yvonne Spears (Ronnie); in-laws, aunts Gloria Goddard, Joan Taylor (Sid); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. The family will receive guest from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, 811 Cameron St. Alexandria, VA 22314. A Life Celebration service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Church of the Resurrection, 2280 N. Beauregard St. Alexandria, VA 22311.
