Philip Fenton CroslandPhilip F. Crosland, aged 98 died March 14, 2017 at Compassionate Care Hospice after a lengthy illness. He was born on December 2, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA to Philip A. Crosland and Sarah Louise Miller. The family moved to Holly Oak when he was two years old and he has lived in that house ever since. He graduated from Claymont High School in 1935 and from Temple University in 1939. He later received credits in advertising from the Charles Morris Price evening school in Philadelphia.Phil enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served in several locations including the Pacific Area of Operations aboard the light cruiser U.S.S. Astoria at the war's end.He was employed by the News Journal Company of Wilmington, DE where he worked for thirty-eight years. His assignments included reviewing amateur and professional theatre groups in the Wilmington and Philadelphia areas. He retired in 1983 as Fine Arts Editor. After retiring he did some part-time jobs and ended up in the 80's for ten years with the Delaware Historical Society as a guide in the Delaware History Museum.He was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Claymont, Delaware where he served in many capacities from Acolyte to Senior Warden. He was on the vestry for many years and represented the church at numerous diocesan conventions.He was married in 1964 to the love of his life Dr. Ernestine Moore, a Vice President a Wilmington Trust Company at the time. Over the years they traveled to many countries throughout the world and enjoyed life in visiting many historic places in this country as well.A lifelong baseball fan, Phil rooted for the Philadelphia A's until they moved from Philadelphia in the 1950's. Since then he has been an avid fan of the Phillies.He was a volunteer for nearly twenty years as a Meals on Wheels provider during his years at Ascension. He also was a representative on the Northeast Parish Council, an organization of Christian churches in the Claymont area.Philip and his wife Ernestine enjoyed 49 years of marriage during which they enjoyed their home their friendships and travel. Ernestine died in October 2013 after a lengthy illness. There are no survivors.In accordance with Phil's request Phil's ashes will be interred alongside of those of his wife Ernestine in the Church of the Ascension Memorial Garden immediately following the 10:00am Sunday service on April 9, 2017 during which he will be remembered.
