ANGOLA — Paul Eugene "Gene" Weicht, 77, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 11, 2017, after a long battle with cancer, at his home in Angola, Indiana. He was born on March 4, 1939, in Angola, Indiana, to Joseph Henry and Olive Elaine (Sharp) Weicht. Gene graduated from Angola High School in 1957 and graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1958. He is the fifth generation of the Weicht family to own and operate the Weicht Funeral Home, Angola, Indiana. He started working at the funeral home at the age of 16 when his father passed away. Gene married Susan Jayne Ulrich on November 1, 1963. He was a member of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association and a member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes. He was a member of the Angola Masonic Lodge #236; Scottish Rite, Valley of Fort Wayne; Mizpah Shrine Club; Past President of the Pokagon Shrine Club; Pokagon Indians; Order of Eastern Star, Ashley Chapter and Sylvan Chapter. He was also a member of the Land of Lakes Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and the Odd Fellow Lodge of Angola. He was also a Nightcrawler. He was a former member of the Angola Kiwanis Club and of the Angola Jaycees. He served his country in the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard where he was on the Indiana Rifle Team. He is a Lifetime member of the Angola American Legion Post 31, Angola, Indiana, George Anspaugh Veterans of Foreign War Post 7205, Angola, Indiana and the Voiture 483 40 & 8. He served on the Angola City Council from 1972-1980 and had served on the Angola City Police Reserve. He cooked for and helped organize the Angola Police Christmas Fish Fry for over 50 years. Gene was very proud to be a member of the American Society of Antique Arms Collectors where he enjoyed displaying some of his antique guns. He was a lifetime member and Benefactor of the NRA and a member of Safari Club International. He was a life member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association, Michigan Gun Collectors Association and the Colorado Gun Collectors Association. Gene was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing all around the world with his family and friends. He had a great time hunting with Ted Nugent. He also enjoyed woodworking and collecting antique guns, where he was known as "The Bullard Rifle Guy". Surviving is his loving wife of 53 years, Susan J. "Suzi" Weicht; his sons, John J. (Gretchen) Weicht and Jeffrey E. Weicht; his daughter, Beth A. (David) Weicht Lee; and six grandchildren, Joseph P. "Joey" Weicht, Holly Y. Weicht, Breanna M. Lee, Samantha M. "Sami" Lee all of Angola, Indiana, Jami M. Everage of Valdosta, Georgia, and Trevor K. (Alexa) Senecal of Albany, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2017 at the Weicht Funeral Home, Angola, Indiana with Pastor Jim Hulbert officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2017 and from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2017, prior to the service at the funeral home. Private family burial will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Indiana. Memorials may be made to Steuben County Cancer Association, Cameron Hospice and Home Health or to the donor's choice.
