Morris Floyd OsborneOak Ridge, TNMorris Floyd Osborne, of Oak Ridge, TN departed this life on May 26, 2017, after a fall from a ladder and a short stint at UT Medical Center. He was 85. Morris was born on September 14, 1931 in Mills River, NC to Floyd and Sue Brittain Osborne. He graduated from University of North Carolina in 1953 and came to work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1955 he married Barbara Fisher and together they raised David, Linda, and Paul Osborne. Morris worked for 41 years at ORNL as a nuclear scientist where he wrote many publications and received multiple awards, including an R&D100 award. A highlight of his career was the two years he and his family spent on assignment in Germany as a guest scientist. Of much greater importance to him was traveling the world with his wife of almost 62 years, parenting his children, enjoying his wide network of friends, service and leadership at Kern United Methodist Church, scoutmastering for troop 328, coaching many basketball and softball teams, volunteering for Girls Inc., and doting on his grandchildren. In addition to his family and community service he had a remarkable memory and was a grandmaster at trivia. He was a formidable athlete, staying active and fit his entire life. He played on a state basketball team in 1949, and ran cross country, for UNC, finishing sixth in the collegiate state cross country championship in 1952. He also played years of volleyball, basketball, softball, and golf. While their children were at home, Morris and Barbara took them on many camping vacations, spending time in the national parks all over the U.S. and Canada. Morris is survived by his wife, Barbara, his three children: David of Louisville, TN, Linda of Oak Ridge, TN, and Paul and his wife, Kim of Knoxville, TN. He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren Joshua, Caleh, and Ellie Osborne all of Chattanooga, TN and Ben and Maddy Fulkerson of Knoxville, TN, and Brittany Laboe (Michael) of Florida. Services were held at Kern Memorial Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 30, with visitation of friends at 2:00 followed by a memorial service at 3:30. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts for Kern Memorial Methodist Church. An online guestbook can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com
