Mary Alice CoxClintonMary Alice Garanflo Cox passed away on Friday, August 18, 2017 at her home in Clinton. Alice was born on October 5, 1929 in Greenville, MS to Robert Ruthven Garanflo and Ernestine Russell Garanflo. While much of her early childhood was spent in Arkansas, she grew up in Jackson, MS where she graduated from Central High School in 1947. Alice attended MSCW and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1951 with a BS in Library Science and from the University of Mississippi in 1963 with a MS in Library Science. After college she was employed for two years at the Baptist Book Store in Jackson, MS. She then worked as a librarian for eight years at Clarke Memorial College in Newton, MS, and then was a part-time Periodicals Librarian in the Science Library of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Then, for 23 years, she served as a Librarian at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. During most of her time there, she worked as the Special Collections Librarian in which she served as archivist of the Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission's Collection, the Mississippi College Collection and other special collections. She was a member of the Mississippi Library Association and the Mississippi Society of Archivists where she served several terms as Secretary/Treasurer.For 48 years she was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Clinton. There, she served on the church library staff. She also served as a GA leader, nursery worker, WMU member, and faithful Sunday School class member and leader. After retirement from Mississippi College she was a member of the Maids and Matrons Club of Clinton where she served as the recording secretary. She was active in Clinton Friends of the Library, was a faithful Price Hall volunteer at the Clinton Community Nature Center and was always ready to visit children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and anything or anyone else worth seeing. She was an active member of the Mississippi College Faculty Wives Club for over 40 years. She and Prentiss attended several Elderhostel programs in the US and overseas and in the process, saw and learned the world. She was faithful to record memories from every trip and distribute a log, whether large or small, to family and friends.Alice married Prentiss G. Cox on April 4, 1953, and they recently celebrated their 64th anniversary. They have four children, David Russell (Linda) of Raton, NM; Robert Prentiss (Sherri) of Bolton, MS; James Kenneth (Cecelia) of Greensboro, NC; and Jo Kathryn Hudson (Tony) of Cumming, GA, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the , the National , the Baptist Children's Village-Mississippi, or the . Alice was preceded in death by her father; her mother, who died when she was two years old; and many aunts, uncles and older friends who helped raise her. Visitation will be at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton on Monday, August 21, 2017 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. The funeral service will be at the First Baptist Church of Clinton at 2:00pm on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 with visitation from 1:00pm - 2:00pm.
