Marvin Moss passed away from natural causes on July 4, 2017, in Sparks, Nevada, at Morningstar Senior Living Center with family at his bedside. Marvin was born on May 27, 1930, in Ogden, Utah to his parents, George Lynne Moss and Veda Fernelius Moss, both preceded him in passing. Shortly after birth the family moved to Sparks, NV. He remained a resident of Sparks for his entire life. He grew up with his siblings, Beverly Moss Gough, Caroline Moss Patacca, Jeanette Moss Jacobs, and James Moss. Caroline and Jeanette both preceded him in passing. Marvin attended Robert Mitchell Elementary School, Sparks Junior High School, and graduated from Sparks High School in 1948. During high school his activities included: drama, track, football, baseball, debate, and boy's glee club. In 1948 he was named Outstanding Senior Boy at Sparks High School and was also Senior Class President. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and remained a supporter of scouting during his life. Marvin Moss was married to Barbara Jean Albee in 1948 and then welcomed their eight children, Linda Sanderson & husband Dale, Stephen Moss & wife Cyndy, Colleen Moss, Joel Moss & wife Pamela, Larry Moss & wife Debbie, Pamela Bell & husband Joseph, Vicki Moss, Michelle Perkins & Mike Soule. He was pleased to have eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He graduated from the University of Nevada Reno in 1952 and received his degree in Education. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and joined R.O.T.C. Dr. Moss ultimately received his doctorate in education, also from the University of Nevada Reno. After graduation he enlisted for active duty in the Army and was a participant in the Korean Conflict. He became an instructor in US Army Staff College and was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. Upon his retirement in 1990 he had achieved the rank of Colonel. In 1955 he began his teaching career. He taught at Sparks Junior High School and became a member of the Teachers' Association. He subsequently became a teaching Principal at Southside Intermediate School. From 1959 - 1964 he was principal of Veterans Memorial Elementary School. He has said that the position of Elementary School Principal is the "Best job in education". He was a lifelong educator. Dr. Marvin Picollo asked him to come to work in the Curriculum Department in the Central Office in 1966, and he became the Director of Curriculum. Marvin married Dixie Lee Schwartz in 1978 and had two step-children, Kevin Schwartz and Steven Schwartz, along with two additional grandchildren. Self-described as the "Happiest Day of My Life", he was asked in 1983 to be the Superintendent of the Washoe County School District and faithfully served in that position for seven years. He retired in 1990 and filled his life with service to his community, his church, and to his family. During his lifetime he received numerous awards and honors including: -President's Medal from University of Nevada, 1989-Governor Proclamation: Outstanding Educator, 1990-Distinguished Nevadan by UNR Board of Regents, 2001-Patriotic Civilian Service Honor, Department of the Army-City of Sparks Planning Commission member, 1998-2006-Regional Planning Commission member, 1999-2006A Remembrance Service will be held on Saturday July 15th, 2017, at 11:00am with a viewing preceding it at 10:00am. The service will be held at the Church of Latter Day Saints at 2955 Rock Boulevard in Sparks, Nevada. Interment is scheduled for Northern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 14 Veterans Way in Fernley, Nevada on Monday, July 17th, at 11:00am.
